Penny Marshall (* 15. October 1943 as Carole Penelope Masciarelli in the district of the Bronx in New York City ; † 17th December 2018 in the Hollywood Hills , Los Angeles , California ) was an American film director , film producer and actress .

Life and accomplishments

Marshall's father, Anthony Wallace Masciarelli, was of Italian American descent, and her mother, Marjorie Irene Ward, had English and Scottish ancestry. Penny Marshall graduated from a private girls' school in New York City and studied at the University of New Mexico . Her brother Garry Marshall (1934-2016) was also a successful director.

After initially appearing in some television commercials, Marshall got her first minor roles in Hollywood in the late 1960s. She became known for her recurring role as Oscar's secretary Myrna in the sitcom Männerwirtschaft (The Odd Couple) between 1972 and 1974. She had her greatest success from 1976 with the sitcom Laverne & Shirley , an offshoot of Happy Days, produced by her brother Garry Marshall , in which she and Cindy Williams played the eponymous friends. For her performance, she was nominated three times for a Golden Globe for best series actress . In the USA Laverne & Shirley was a huge success with a total of 178 episodes up to 1983, but it was never broadcast in German-speaking countries. She played a small guest role in the film 1941 - Where Please Go to Hollywood (1979). In the film Auf die Harte Tour (1991) she played the agent of the film star Nick Lang, played by Michael J. Fox .

Marshall made her debut as a director on several episodes of the television series Laverne & Shirley . At the film Jumpin 'Jack Flash (1986) she worked with Whoopi Goldberg and Jonathan Pryce together in the film Big (1988) with Tom Hanks , the film A League of Their Own (1992) with Geena Davis and again with Tom Hanks. She had one of her greatest successes in 1990 with the film drama Time of Awakening (1990) with Robert De Niro and Robin Williams , which was nominated for an Oscar in the category of best film . In her 1994 film Mr. Bill , Danny played DeVito ; in Riding in Cars with Boys played (2001) Drew Barrymore and James Woods . She became the first female director to direct with Big in a film that grossed over $ 100 million in US cinemas .

Marshall has produced films such as With Friends Like These… (1998) with Adam Arkin , Laura San Giacomo and Beverly D'Angelo , Das Comeback (2005) with Russell Crowe and Renée Zellweger or In Love with a Witch (2005) with Nicole Kidman .

Marshall was married to Michael Henry from 1961 to 1963, and to Rob Reiner from 1971 to 1979 . Their daughter, the actress Tracy Reiner , comes from their first marriage. Penny Marshall died in December 2018 at the age of 75.
