Virginia "Geena" Elizabeth Davis (born January 21, 1956 in Wareham , Plymouth County, Massachusetts ) is an American actress and film producer . The Oscar and Golden Globe winner is the founder of the Geena Davis Institute .

Career

Davis studied acting in Boston and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1979 . Since then she has appeared in numerous films. In 1989 she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for The Travels of Mr. Leary . She received another nomination for Best Actress for Thelma & Louise . In 1995 she played the lead role in The Pirate Bride , the film was one of the biggest financial flops in cinema history. In 2006 she was awarded a Golden Globe for best actress in a television series (drama) for her portrayal of the first woman President of the United States Mackenzie Allen in the short-lived series Welcome, Mrs. President . She had previously been shortlisted for her performance in the films Thelma & Louise, A Class of One and Speechless . In 2006 she was nominated for Welcome and Mrs. President for an Emmy .

Having observed and experienced gender disparities in the film industry, she founded the Geena Davis Institute in 2007 , an institution that deals scientifically with the subject of the film industry and gender. In a study published in 2014, the Institute confirmed Davis' belief that women are still underrepresented in the film industry. This is based on the evaluation of the ten most successful films from 2010-2013 compared to 1946 in film productions from Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Russia, South Korea, the USA and Great Britain (as well as US-British Co-productions).

In 1999 she took part in archery in the US Olympic qualification. She finished 24th out of 28 participants in the final and thus missed the leap into the team.

Private life

Davis is currently divorced from her fourth husband, Reza Jarrahy. The couple met in 1999 and married on September 1, 2001. According to Jarrahy, the separation took place on November 15, 2017, due to irreconcilable differences. The couple have three children, a daughter born in 2002 and twin sons born in 2004. Before that, she was married to Richard Emmolo (1982-83), actor Jeff Goldblum (1987-90) and director Renny Harlin (1993-98).
