action

The non-party US Vice President Mackenzie Allen has her office for one single reason: Presidential candidate Teddy Bridges needed her as a vote-catcher for the left-middle class - female . Now that he has moved into the White House with her , she is largely fobbed off with representative duties abroad.

But then the president suddenly suffers a stroke from an aneurysm and is initially incapacitated. Vice-President Allen is hastily summoned from a state visit to Paris . The president encourages her to step down in favor of Nathan Templeton, chairman of the House of Representatives , so that he can succeed Bridges in the event of his resignation or death. Allen at first reluctantly declares his willingness to do so, but in a private conversation with Templeton he realizes that he is taking a position that is unbearable for them when it comes to women and Muslims .

When Bridges actually dies, Allen refuses to give up the office she is entitled to and becomes the first woman to take the presidential oath. Hostility from all sides soon begins. Templeton is already planning Allen's case from the background, and there is also a strong wind from the new president's own family: her eldest daughter Rebecca disapproves of her mother's decision to take office, while Allen's husband and chief of staff Rod Calloway suddenly takes on the role the first lady or the "first gentleman" finds again - which he absolutely does not like.

background

Commander in Chief started with very good ratings in the USA and has even been considered the best new series of the season. Problems behind the scenes (multiple replacement of the executive producer - first Rod Lurie , then Steven Bochco , lastly Dee Johnson ) - ultimately forced ABC to take the series off the program several times for a few weeks and to change the broadcast dates.

The series was broadcast in Germany on the private broadcaster Sat.1 , initially on Tuesdays at 10:15 p.m., but later on Tuesdays at 11:15 p.m., as the ratings only increased last. The German title Welcome, Mrs. President is incorrect in that the correct salutation is Madam President ; this is also used in the German dubbed version.
