action
The Conway family of six live normal and happy lives. Up to one day in 1974. Little Billy was playing with the sprinkler in the garden when his neighbor Mr. Smolensky caught fire while grilling, fell on the sprinkler while burning and died. The shocked Billy then runs his head against the flagpole in the front yard. His parents Gloria and Ray as well as his sister Linda and the twins Gene and Larry watch a movie in the drive-in theater with Billy that evening. On the way back in the rain, Ray, distracted by Billy, has a serious accident in which Linda dies and Gene can only participate in life in a vegetative state.
Eight years later, fate still strikes the Conway family mercilessly. Ray leaves the family, Larry drowns his grief in alcohol and Billy is emotionally numb. When Gloria's womb needs to be removed, Billy is placed with the neighboring Post family, whose son Doug Genes was a former best friend. The two become friends and do a lot together. For example, they raid a supermarket naked and steal a bowling ball from a car on the way home. Billy throws the ball down the street when suddenly a car appears, has to swerve and crashes into a power pole. The dead driver is Doug's father. It's almost a normal situation for Billy, but Doug is devastated.
Another stroke of fate hits the family when Gene dies. But Mrs. Smolensky gives Billy new courage to face a visit to the cemetery. She gives Billy the bowling ball she hid from the police. Mrs. Smolensky thinks Billy has paid enough for his mistakes in his life. He throws the ball along the cemetery path so that it disappears into a hedge. Her car is stopped by the police on the way home. At that moment the bowling ball falls from a sewer pipe at a higher level onto the hood of the police car.
criticism
“A jet-black tragic comedy about strokes of fate and how to cope with them. Convincingly played and carefully staged, the film cleverly unfolds its story, which is only inconspicuous at first glance. "
“A mother-son relationship that is quite unusual for various reasons against the backdrop of the early 80s is the focus of this ambitiously made and excellently played family drama. For first time since "Stuart Little 2" stands the great Geena Davis ( "Thelma & Louise") again at the center of a movie, but owns the majority of the scenes the young performers and their sometimes outrageous attempts at coping with trauma. Great feelings of black humor, those who get involved will get their money's worth. "
