The giant tomb of Laccaneddu is located south of Putifigari near the road to Villanova Monteleone in the province of Sassari in Sardinia . The buildings called “Tumbas de los zigantes” in Sardu and “Tombe dei Giganti” in Italian (plur.) Are the largest prenuraghic cults in Sardinia and are among the latest megalithic structures in Europe . The 321 known giant tombs are monuments of the Bronze Age Bonnanaro culture (1,800–1,500 BC), the forerunner culture of the Nuragher.

Series of types of Sardinian megaliths

Type sequence

Structurally, giant tombs appear in two variants. The systems with portal steles and exedra are of the older type. In later systems, the exedra consists of a rectangular facade made of processed and layered stone blocks, instead of monolithic steles . The giant grave of Laccaneddu is a newer type (with a square facade).

description

The gallery of large orthostats made of trachyte has been preserved from the giant grave , while there are no traces of exedra . The east-west oriented facility has a length of 7.1 and a width of 2.8 m. The exedra that went out had a maximum width of 6.6 m. Behind the apse at the end of the gallery lies a structure that could have been a dolmen .

Nearby is the Appiu Nuragic Complex. The complex of around 200 stone huts, excavated since 2001, of which only the waist-high foundations are still standing, has two smaller dolmens , the remains of a giant's grave , a stone circle and a badly battered nuraghi .
