General

The city of Villanova Monteleone was only founded in 1354 after the Catalans conquered Algheros and the Sardinian inhabitants were expelled. The houses have old, unplastered facades made of trachyte . In the "Palatu ´e sas Iscolas" there is an ethnographic museum. The churches of San Leonardo, Santa Croce and Rosario have remarkable wooden altars.

The much-sung “Su Paradiso” fountain and the “Sa Rocca Pinta” rock formation on the road to Alghero are just as worth seeing as the view of Alghero.

Archaeological sights

Nuraghe Appiu Archaeological Park

Nuraghe Appiu

To the south (towards Bosa) the road leads to the "Parco Archeologico Nuraghe Appiu" and to Montresta. The complex of formerly around 200 stone huts, of which only the waist-high foundations are still standing, has been excavated since 2001, has two smaller dolmens , the remains of the giant grave Punta e su Crabile, a stone circle , a megaron temple and the badly battered nuraghi . The unsightly cone of rubble has three well-preserved rooms inside. Remains of amphorae, grinding stones, whetstones or polishing stones made of pebble or obsidian , mortars , sickles made of bronze , jugs, crucibles and weaving weights testify that the huts were used for various activities, for example for burning vessels, for the production and processing of Wool as well as for grinding grain. The complex is dated to 900–800 BC. Dated to the time of the Nuragic culture (1600-238 BC) There is a visitor center in the park.

Laccaneddu giant grave

Near the road to Puttigari is the giant tomb of Laccaneddu , whose 7.1 m long and 2.8 m wide chamber made of large trachyte stones has been preserved, while only the 6.8 m wide remainder of a facade remains. Behind the apse lies a structure that could have been a dolmen .
