Aglientu (Gallurese Santu Francìscu d'Aglièntu ) is a municipality in the province of Sassari in the Italian region of Sardinia with 1,193 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

geography

Aglientu is located in the historical region of Gallura in northern Sardinia on a granite hill typical of this landscape , only a few kilometers from the coast. The inhabitants are spread across the town of the same name as well as the coastal districts of Portobello , Monti Russu Littigheddu and Vignola Mare .

The neighboring municipalities are Aggius , Luogosanto , Santa Teresa Gallura , Tempio Pausania and Trinità d'Agultu e Vignola .

history

Neolithic relics and numerous nuraghi indicate an early settlement of the area around Aglientu. In Roman times there was a rest area near the district of Vignola Mare with the possibility of changing cattle on the Porto Torres - Santa Teresa Gallura road . The tower of Vignola was built during the Spanish and Aragonese rule to ward off Saracen attacks. Today's core town Aglientu was founded in 1776 by Karl Emanuel III. and Viktor Amadeus III. founded. Aglientu belonged to the city of Tempio Pausania until 1959 , since then it has been an independent municipality.

economy

Aglientus' economic mainstay is tourism. There are three campsites and three holiday settlements in the municipality , all of which are located by the sea. In addition, agriculture and the production of pasta , bread and confectionery play a role.
