Attractions

"L'orso" - "The Bear"

Above the coast, a panoramic road leads to Capo d'Orso , where "The Bear", a gigantic formation of the granite rocks typical of Gallura , watches over the Costa Smeralda .

Monte Altura fortress

A few kilometers west of the city center of Palau is a fortress on Monte Altura, which was built from locally extracted rock between 1889 and 1891. It was part of the defense system around La Maddalena.

traffic

Palau is a port city. From the small ferry port, car ferries run up to 80 times a day to the island of La Maddalena . The average journey time is 15 minutes. The port is called by the ferries of the shipping companies Saremar , Enermar, Tremar and in some years also from Genoa , Naples and Porto-Vecchio ( Corsica ).

In addition, private excursion boats start their tours through the La Maddalena Archipelago and along the coast from the marina . These islands are part of a sunken land bridge between Sardinia and Corsica . They belong to the La Maddalena Archipelago National Park and some of the islands may only be entered on guided tours.

Palau has two stations on the narrow-gauge Sassari – Palau railway , which are served by Trenino Verde in the summer months . One train station (Palau) is located at the south end of Palau, the other forms the end of the line at the port of Palau (Palau Marina). In between there is a hairpin with a platform, where only the train attendant gets out to set the switch. In Palau Marina there is a so-called "Trenino-verde-Point", consisting of a parked car where tickets can be bought. From Palau the trains go to Tempio Pausania , where you can change trains to Sassari .
