Lady Bird is an American tragic comedy directed by Greta Gerwig based on an original screenplay by the director. The film tells of the strong-willed Christine McPherson, played by Saoirse Ronan , who longs to leave her California hometown and study on the US east coast. As a result, she comes into conflict with her mother, played by Laurie Metcalf , who tries to keep the family together.

The script takes up numerous elements from Gerwig's life story. Despite the parallels, Gerwig does not want the film to be understood as an autobiographical work .

The film premiered on September 1, 2017 as part of the Telluride Film Festival . Lady Bird has received a number of awards, including two Golden Globe Awards 2018 for best comedy film and for leading actress Saoirse Ronan, as well as five Oscar nominations, including best film .

action

In 2002. 17-year-old Christine McPherson lives in Sacramento , would rather be called Lady Bird, and her mother Marion also takes this wish to heart. She really wants to get away from Sacramento, out of the Californian wasteland. She is hoping for a place at university, preferably somewhere on the east coast, but her mother reminds her of the already tense financial situation the family is in. Lady Bird's brother Miguel was adopted. His girlfriend Shelly has also lived with the McPhersons since she was kicked out of her home by her parents. Marion works in a hospital where she often works double shifts. While they are driving together, Lady Bird opens the door and collapses into the street. A cast now adorns her broken arm.

Lady Bird attends a Catholic high school. Together with her best friend Julie, she takes part in a casting for a musical that will be performed at the school in the fall. During the rehearsals she quickly becomes aware of Danny. They dance at the Homecoming Western Ball, kiss for the first time and spend many romantic moments together in the weeks that follow. Danny also wants to get out of Sacramento and dreams of living in Paris. He even takes Lady Bird with him to his wealthy grandmother for Thanksgiving.

Against her mother's wishes, Lady Bird applies to various universities. She informs her father about this. Even if he has just lost his job, he tries to support his daughter in her future plans. Lady Bird is not really good at school, however, and so she tries to cheat her way. A student advisor gives her hope because her SAT rating is good. On the other hand, she jeopardized her chances of graduation when she snubbed a speaker during a lecture on abortion . Since Lady Bird with her dyed red hair is behaving in a rather inappropriate manner, her mother has concerns that the family could be viewed as antisocial, which would not improve the chances of her father to find a job.

The Sacramento International Airport . From there Lady Bird flies to New York

After Lady Bird catches Danny kissing a boy in the toilet after the premiere of the musical, she turns to Kyle, who is a member of a hip band. She gets closer to him in the cafe where she just got a job. Lady Bird almost forgets her best friend Julie and enjoys spending time with her new friends in the Deuce, a parking lot just outside Sacramento. However, she does not want to tell her new friend which neighborhood in Sacramento she lives in, which is why she begins to lie. When she has sex with Kyle for the first time in her life and learns that it wasn't the first time for him, she is disappointed in him. Still, they want to go to prom together. On the way there, Lady Bird realizes how much she has adjusted and got lost. She speaks her mind again openly and asks Kyle to drive her to Julie. She dances at the ball with her old and new best friend.

When Marion learns at a meal together on the occasion of Lady Bird's graduation that Lady Bird has applied to some universities, she is angry that her husband and daughter acted behind her back. Suddenly things happen in rapid succession. Her brother Miguel gets a job that her father applied for, and she passes her driver's license test, which she had failed a number of times. She also received an acceptance from New York State University . After moving and a night in New York where she drank way too much, she wakes up in the hospital. It's Sunday and after attending a church service she calls her parents and puts them on the answering machine. She reaches out to Christine, tells her mother that she loves and is grateful to her, and speaks less derogatory about Sacramento than she did before she moved.

production

Directed by Greta Gerwig, who also wrote the screenplay for the film. After the 2008 film drama Nights and Weekends, staged together with Joe Swanberg , Lady Bird is Gerwig's first independently realized film. The role of Lady Bird's best friend Julie Steffans was given to Beanie Feldstein . Lucas Hedges plays Lady Bird's first boyfriend Danny O'Neill, Timothée Chalamet her second Kyle Scheible. Lois Smith and Stephen Henderson star in the roles of Sister Sarah Joan and Father Leviatch .

Filming began on August 30, 2016 in Sacramento, California, where it also took place later, including at Sacramento International Airport . Film analysis

Autobiographical Aspects

Directed by Greta Gerwig , who also wrote the script

“Lady Bird is the exact opposite of me when I was a teenager. I never wanted to be addressed by any other name and I never dyed my hair red. I followed the rules and wanted to please my fellow human beings. "

- Greta Gerwig

Although numerous parallels can be drawn to her own youth, Gerwig does not want the film to be understood as an autobiographical work . Even if the director herself comes from Sacramento, like Lady Bird is a decidedly liberal artist and her mother also works as a nurse, the events in Lady Bird are not autobiographical, but all fictional. In an interview with André Wesche from the Free Press , Gerwig said that Lady Bird was the exact opposite of her in her teenage years, even if there are certainly parallels: “I never wanted to be addressed by another name and I never dyed my hair red . I followed the rules and wanted to please those around me. When I was writing the script, I wanted to show a girl who has a surprising number of flaws, but is also very brave and admirable. Maybe that was my way of exploring a life that I could never lead myself at 17. "

Nevertheless, it can be seen in the city of Sacramento, in which the director also went through her puberty at the turn of the millennium, that the film feeds on historically underpinned memory impulses, according to Lukas Stern in the Berliner Zeitung . Günter Jekubzik from the Augsburger Allgemeine also thinks that you can't avoid seeing Greta Gerwig herself in this figure of Lady Bird, the passion for theater and culture, the defiant determination and the awkward contortions caused by sheer uncertainty are too similar.

Film genre

Lukas Stern explains that the great drama of this film is made up less of the resistance that slows down the adolescent urge to act and provocation, but rather that there is a lack of such resistance, because although the McPhersons are not problem-free and conflict-free, the stress level is still of the family in a low-risk everyday life. Peter Zander also says that Lady Bird is more than just a coming-of-age film , one about growing up that abounds and has to give again and again, because Gerwig succeeds in developing a story that is always valid for everyone appeals to active and past young people, female and male in nature: “As in all the films that Gerwig helped develop, this is also about likeable losers who are shown with confident humor, without turning a blind eye to social or interpersonal problems Conflicts would be downplayed. "

Gian-Philip Andreas from Westfälische Nachrichten says that only at first glance does Gerwig present another so-called “Coming of Age” story about the hardships and joys of adolescents, who need constant supplies for the next generation because the film works also ideal as a comedie humaine for adults: “It is not an exaggeration to say that Gerwig, Ronan and Metcalf in the retracing of the many small repulsive and rapprochement movements of Lady Bird and Marion, between annoyance and sincere love, the most precise drawing of a mother-daughter -Relation of the younger US cinema has succeeded. "

Film title and structure

Ladybird also means a ladybug in English.

Peter Zander explains in the Berliner Morgenpost about the film title and the name Lady Bird, which the protagonist chooses for herself instead of the one given by her parents, “Ladybird” is the English term for the ladybird , a creature that can and can simply fly away is understood as a lucky charm. Written separately, “Lady Bird” also sounds like ennoblement , according to Zander. Lady Bird's motivation to leave her hometown as soon as possible is announced before the film begins: "Anyone who speaks of California hedonism has never spent a Christmas in Sacramento." With a fade-in of this quote from US author Joan Didion opens Greta Gerwig's first solo directing work.

Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter says the film just flies from scene to scene, making it look like a sketch comedy. The feeling of genuineness and authenticity, however, covers any hint of kitschiness, so that the many short scenes gradually come together and ultimately result in a whole that represents Lady Bird's world of feelings and thoughts. Christoph Petersen says about these short scenes of film starts , even if the viewer usually only perceives all the characters in their relationship to Lady Bird, there are always interspersed, always very short moments in which the other characters can also be seen in a different environment able to see. In these scenes, which are often only a few seconds long, the film, which otherwise focuses entirely on its title character, opens up a glimpse of the many small universes around Lady Bird, which are also full of life and longings, says Petersen.

In the end, Christine managed to take off and she went out into the big world, according to Bernd Haasis from the Stuttgarter Zeitung . She quickly realized, however, that a girl might come out of Sacramento, but Sacramento not out of the girl, and after all she didn't run away from her hometown, but from herself, according to Haasis.

Cultural references

At the beginning of the film, shortly after the fade-in of the quote from Joan Didion, Lady Bird and her mother hear the final passage of John Steinbeck's Fruits of Wrath in the car . For her, this novel was work that California definitely understands, says Gerwig. Sacramento is in the agricultural valley, and many people came there as dust bowl farmers .

Lady Bird and her best friend Julie cuddle up in the film to hear the song Crash Into Me by the jam rocker Dave Matthews Band , a once ubiquitous hit from 1996. Gerwig was convinced that Crash Into Me had to be the song that Lady Bird hears after the boys break her heart. Gerwig had never considered an alternative. “It was written in the script,” she said, “that was the song I wanted. I had no idea what I would have done if Dave Matthews had said no. I wrote him a letter describing how much I loved the song. "

On the terrace of the café where Lady Bird works, Kyle is reading the history textbook A People's History of the United States by historian Howard Zinn . Gerwig had read the 1980 book while in high school, especially because it was mentioned in the movie Good Will Hunting .

The day Lady Bird turns 18, she buys cigarettes and a copy of Playgirl in a supermarket , which for her is an expression of adulthood. Outside the shop she flips through the magazine, smoking a cigarette, and naked men spread across the pages.

The writing Kings Forever 1985 , which can be seen in a montage that shows Lady Bird at the end of the film, driving through Sacramento, has two meanings. One of them is that the Sacramento Kings came to town in 1985 after moving away from Kansas City .

Age rating

In the US, the MPAA gave the film an R rating for some expressions and a sex act , which corresponds to a 17-year-old rating . The film also shows naked men in a short fade-in from Playgirl magazine. In California you come of age at the age of 18 and can therefore, like Lady Bird in the film, buy pornography. This scene has been censored in some countries, such as Australia.

In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK without any age restriction. The statement of reasons for approval states: “Conflicts are always negotiated in dialogue, and the atmosphere of the film is ultimately characterized by harmony. Even individual scenes that deal with sexuality or drug consumption are staged so discreetly that they are not even accessible to smaller children. Since the film as a whole does not contain any thematically or audiovisually problematic elements and the security of the family is never questioned on an emotional level, even preschoolers can process the film without risk. ”In one scene of the film, Lady Bird is talking to her best friend Julie on the possibility of masturbation with a shower head. Lady Bird consumes cannabis in the film and gets drunk at a party in New York, but she wakes up after that night in a hospital and realizes here at the latest that smoking and the consumption of alcohol are not all that one can get excited about in life.

English language reviews

The film has so far won over 99 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 8.8 out of a possible 10 points. With 196 exclusively positive reviews as of December 10, 2017, this is the first film in the history of Rotten Tomatoes to receive a positive rating from such a large number of critics. In May 2018, the film Paddington 2 achieved an equally high level of approval. As part of the 2017 Golden Tomato Awards , the film also emerged as the winner in the Best Comedy Film category . Also on Metacritic received Ladybird an excellent rating of 94 out of 100 possible points. From the New York Film Critics Association has Ladybird 2017 named the best film of the year.

Tina Hassannia, critic at rogerebert.com , is of the opinion that Greta Gerwig has proven with the film that the actress is also well versed behind the camera. Let her personal experiences flow into this optimistic and charming coming-of-age comedy .

Sara Stewart of the New York Post says the thoroughly modern film, clearly made for women, strongly suggests that even more great things can be expected from Gerwig standing behind the camera.

German-language reviews

Alexandra Seitz calls the work in epd Film a “decidedly unexcited film” and praises the play by Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf , who in their roles as daughter and mother were extremely successful, “the traditionally conflicting relationship between mother and daughter is multifaceted but always to be credible and engaging. ”The result is a“ film about successful female self-empowerment - whose rebellious heroine is also a good role model ”. Tomasz Kurianowicz von der Zeit is of the opinion that Gerwig's debut film is " completely reinventing the genre of adolescence films ." Background ”. For him it is clear that “Lady Bird is one of the most beautiful films of the overused” genre. He particularly highlights the book by Greta Gerwig and the music by Jon Brion .

From the German Film and Media Review was Ladybird with the predicate particularly valuable provided. The reasoning states: “Although the film is precisely located in terms of time and place, it tells a universal story of growing up. Millions can dock with Christine's feelings. Gerwig looks back at her roots without resentment. She gives all the characters tremendous warmth, she paints a friendly picture of Christine's Catholic school and her hometown, which she also had to leave in order to find her own way. Rebellion doesn't always have to be loud and shrill. "

Gross profit

In the United States, where the film was initially shown in four theaters and then shown in 37 theaters the following week, it grossed 1,731,828 US dollars in the first ten days, which is an exceptionally good result based on the average revenue per theater. Overall, the box office there amounts to almost 49 million US dollars, making it the most successful production of A24 in the USA. The total worldwide revenue for the film is $ 78.6 million. In Germany, the film recorded 190,897 visitors.

Use in school lessons

The online portal kinofenster.de recommends Lady Bird for the subjects English, German , religion, ethics , psychology and social studies / community studies and offers material for the film for the classroom. There, Philipp Bühler writes, refreshingly unconventional in content and staging, treats the youth comedy with the process of cutting the cord from the parents' home on the threshold of growing up, the classic subject of the genre. Lady Bird's split relationship to family and origin gives the opportunity to discuss these topics in class: “In the arguments with parents, both sides can be understood: Do children have to be grateful to their parents, as the mother thinks? Conversely, what should parents do in order not to restrict their children's urge for freedom? ”Social contrasts, the economic conditions and the political background of the Bush era and the Iraq war formed further points of contact, Bühler continued, and the US educational system could also help Germany can be compared. At the formal level, the students could examine what distinguishes the film, which is consistently written from a female perspective, from others in its genre, says Bühler.
