action

The successful crime writer Harlan Thrombey is found dead in his room by his housekeeper Fran on the morning of his 85th birthday. Although the authorities officially assume a suicide , the police officers Elliot and Wagner question the remaining family members to clarify any final questions. The well-known private detective Benoit Blanc is also present, who was commissioned by a person unknown to him to take on the case. As a result, the three asked all relatives about the birthday party on the evening before Harlan's death and about special incidents the following night.

One after the other, Linda Drysdale, Harlan's eldest daughter, her husband Richard, Harlan's youngest son Walt, who is also the head of the in-house book publisher, Harlan's widowed daughter-in-law Joni and her daughter Meg answer questions from the investigators. However, they all dish out tales of lies to the police about conflicts with the head of the family on the evening before his death, as their secrets would all be good motives for the crime. Only Blanc cannot be fooled and as the last interviewed Harlan's nurse Marta Cabrera, who became a good friend of the deceased and is therefore well informed about the family.

Since Marta vomits when she lies, Blanc lets her confirm his hypotheses : Harlan wanted to inform his daughter Linda about her husband Richard's affair, and also cut the university costs for his granddaughter Meg, since his daughter-in-law Joni wanted him to pay several hundred thousand dollars cheated, and finally his son Walt took control of the book publisher away, because he wanted to persuade him to sell the filming rights to Harlan's books. Although Blanc has no information about an argument on the evening of the birthday party between the deceased and his grandson Ransom, the son of Linda and Richard, all statements of the rest of the family members agree, so that the investigators continue to assume a suicide.

Only Marta knows what actually happened that evening: after she put Harlan to bed, she tried to give him his medication, but mistook the bottles for sleeping pills and morphine , so she injected him with an overdose of the pain reliever; The antidote naloxone , which is always at hand, was nowhere to be found either . Because of this, Harlan decided it was time for him to die, so he prevented Martha from calling for rescue. In the certainty of certain death, he decided to take Marta out of the eyes of the investigators, also to make sure that the police would not discover on closer investigation that Marta's mother and sister did not have a residence permit.

His plan was to kill himself so that Marta would leave the house under the observation of the rest of the relatives, later return secretly via a secret passage, then disguise herself as Harlan and so after her leaving the house the liveliness of Harlan towards his descendants could pretend. While sneaking in and out, however, she was briefly spotted by Nana Thrombey, Harlan's very old and cognitive mother, who Marta thought was ransomware.

Blanc sees Marta as the only "non-suspect", as she does not benefit from Harlan's death and cannot lie unnoticed, and unceremoniously appoints her as his assistant during the investigation the next day. Marta is able to cleverly render a surveillance video showing how she parks her car in the nearby forest after leaving the property and obliterating the footprints that would have indicated her return to the property. However, Blanc's attention is drawn to a broken piece of trellis , through which he, with Marta's help, finds the secret passage to Harlan's room as well as debris on the ground, which leads him to conclude that there are outside influences.

At the same time, the sealed will of the deceased is read out to family members, including Ransom, who was not at his grandfather's funeral, in the house. As everyone present has to realize with horror, Harlan bequeathed his entire fortune in the tens of millions, the publishing house and the house to Marta and at the same time excluded all of his relatives from the inheritance. They then try to convince the former nurse to turn down the inheritance. Marta, with Ransom's help, can evade the situation; to him, the “black sheep” of the family, she confesses her guilt for the death of the head of the family.

Ransom convinces her to keep the legacy and promises her support if she pays him his share in return. So she does not respond to further demands of the family, but finds a threatening letter in her mail in which a stranger claims to know about her guilt, presents an incomplete report from the forensic medicine as evidence and asks for a meeting. Together with Ransomware, Marta goes to forensic medicine to destroy all evidence against her. They find out on site that this has already happened through arson on the forensic medicine building. However, Blanc is also present and becomes aware of Marta. A little later, Ransom is arrested because Nana remembers having seen him the night of the murder.

When meeting the stranger, it turns out that it is Fran, who, however, was injected with an overdose of morphine and is dying. After she was able to tell Marta one more sentence, Marta tries to reanimate the housekeeper. Marta calls an ambulance, tells Blanc the full story, and is ready to tell the truth to the rest of the family. Back at the house, Marta guesses where Fran left the copy of the toxicological report. With the help of this, Blanc ascertains that Harlan did not have any noticeable levels of substances in his blood, so he shouldn't have died. Therefore, he prevents Martha from talking to the family.

Through the collected statements of relatives and found evidence, Blanc can reconstruct the whole story of the evening: At the birthday party, Harlan told Ransom that he would disinherit his entire family and instead bequeath everything to Marta. Ransom then decided to blame Marta for Harlan's death, as they would become so unworthy of inheritance and the inheritance would fall back into the hands of the family. After his argument about the secret passage he snuck into Harlan's room, swapped the contents of the vials, stole the antidote and had to just let the evidence go unnoticed over the next few days and put Blanc on the case.

He was also seen briefly by Nana. During Harlan's funeral, he went to his room again, but was watched by Fran, who became suspicious and got the toxicological report from the coroner through her cousin . When she realized that Ransom was the real culprit, she forwarded the threatening letter to him. However, since Marta had previously admitted her guilt to him, Ransom played his game with Marta, to whom he passed the letter on, and eliminated Fran. On the night of death, Marta, based on her many years of experience, was able to differentiate between the two remedies due to their different appearance and viscosity and was thus able to inject correctly despite incorrect labeling, which is why she was not to blame for his death.

When Ransom is confronted with this theory by Blanc, he denies everything and Blanc realizes that Ransom's actions cannot be proven. However, Ransom recklessly admits the attempted murder of Fran on the assumption that Fran survived. However, since Fran actually died of her injuries in the hospital, investigators can convict him of murder. While Linda realizes from a letter from her father written in secret ink that Richard has betrayed her, Marta recovers in her new, inherited house.

production

Daniel Craig plays the lead role
Jamie Lee Curtis at the premiere for the film at
Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2019

In a 2010 interview, Rian Johnson told The Independent that he would be interested in an "old-fashioned crime film" in the style of Agatha Christie , whose fan he has been since childhood. After almost a decade planning how to direct his own crime thriller, he finally wrote the script from the beginning of the year to the end of August 2018. According to his own statement, he proceeded in a structured manner and began with the rough framework before deepening more and more details.

His approach was to place a Hitchcock thriller in the middle of a Whodunit . Similar to the crime series Columbo , he supposedly wanted to uncover as many secrets as possible early on in the story, but saw the danger that the viewer would sit back and let the detective be identified on the screen. That is why he staged Marta Cabrera, who was supposedly responsible for death, as the amiable protagonist and Benoit Blanc as her opponent. Johnson wanted to create a cheering tension with the audience, because the audience is used to the detective always discovering the secret. He also cleared the draft of all curses in order to enable PG-13 approval.

A little later, Daniel Craig , who was supposed to play a mystery-solving detective, was won over to the project after Danny Boyle left the film James Bond 007: No Time to Die , which was being planned at the time , its production was postponed and a time window thus opened opened for James Bond actor Craig. The British actor used an American southern accent in his impersonation of the role , which was modeled on the historian Shelby Foote and for whom he was provided with a language coach.

On September 3, 2018, Johnson and producer Ram Bergman finally presented the script to major film distributors, who were able to secure the distribution rights at an auction at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival . Knives Out was described as a contemporary thriller with Whodunit. It was also announced that they were looking for actors for six to eight leading roles around Craig. Ultimately, Lionsgate secured the North American distribution rights and Universum Film the German distribution rights.

By the time filming started, Chris Evans , Ana de Armas , Jamie Lee Curtis , Don Johnson , Michael Shannon and Lakeith Stanfield could be engaged. In early November 2018, it was announced that Christopher Plummer , Toni Collette and Katherine Langford are also part of the cast. Other supporting roles were cast with Jaeden Martell , Riki Lindhome , Edi Patterson and Raúl Castillo . Furthermore, Frank Oz , who is best known for his dubbing, confirmed in March 2019 that he would have a short appearance in a small role. A role intended for Ricky Jay had to be replaced with M. Emmet Walsh due to his death .

Johnson attributed the fact that such a star cast was possible to the rapid start of shooting, which meant that nobody had to plan far into the future. While Evans could be won over by the location in Massachusetts , where he wanted to take a break after leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe , de Armas, proposed by casting director Mary Vernieu , initially didn't want to play a Latin American role. After a personal meeting with Johnson and the opportunity to read the script, however, she let herself be changed.

Jenny Eagan was responsible for the costumes for the individual actors . With her first drafts she had to orientate herself exclusively on the descriptions of the script, as no roles were filled at that time. Later, their ideas were mixed with influences from Johnson and sometimes the respective actors. For Craig's costume, for example, Eagan was based on the style of the southern states of the '50s: it should be basically simple, a little eccentric and peppered with specific details.

Filming began on October 30, 2018 in Boston under the working title Morning Bell . The cameraman was Steve Yedlin , who previously worked with Johnson on Star Wars: The Last Jedi . He used the 1.85: 1 film format, which is larger than the standard 2.39: 1 cinema format, to make the film look older on the one hand and to accommodate more people in the picture on the other. In November 2018, filming took place in Natick , a month later in Wellesley .

The hundred-year-old Ames Mansion in Borderland State Park south of Boston was used for interior shots and a few exterior shots of the Thrombeys mansion . This was selected by producer Bergman even before the script was finished and was ultimately the reason why the production took place around Boston. However, the production team only used the first floor of the property for filming, the upper floors were recreated in a studio due to the lack of prerequisites. One advantage of the house was that you could use the existing interior and set designer David Crank only had to add additional props. In addition, production could use natural light from outside. So that one could see the property from the inside even in the dark, many night shots were taken during the day, for which the windows were specifically darkened. On the other hand, difficulties arose for cameraman Yedlin in implementing the dynamic tracking shots desired by Johnson in the narrow spaces filled with props, actors and crew members.

A private mansion outside of Boston was used for outdoor shots, and the success of the film caused the owners to take unwanted interest. Hugh Ransom Drysdale's home is in Lincoln , the forensic medicine building in Marlborough and a restaurant in the movie in Berlin , all in Massachusetts. The chase was filmed in Maynard and Waltham . Other locations were Medfield State Hospital in Medfield and Canton . Filming officially ended on December 31, 2018.

Knives Out was shown to test audiences in Orange County and Dallas . A first trailer was released on July 2, 2019. A little later it was announced that Knives Out will be shown at the Toronto International Film Festival 2019, where it finally celebrated its world premiere on September 7th. After other screenings at film festivals, including the London Film Festival , the Chicago International Film Festival , the Festival Internacional de Cine de Mar del Plata and the Stockholm International Film Festival , the film was released in North American cinemas on November 27, 2019. A German-language cinema release took place on January 2, 2020.

In North America, the film was released digitally on February 7, 2020 on DVD and Blu-ray . The German home cinema launch took place digitally on May 1st, 2020 and on May 8th on DVD, Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray with around three hours of bonus material.

reception

Age rating

In the United States, the film was rated PG-13 by the MPA . In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK for children aged 12 and over. The reason for the release states that the film is staged in a calm and dialogue-oriented manner overall. He draws his tension mainly from the investigations of the detective and from the ever new revelations. Two killing scenes are kept short and not very bloody, so that children and adolescents from 12 years of age do not have to fear excessive emotional demands. In addition, the plot is recognizable for 12-year-olds as a crime story infused with ironic humor, which makes it easier to distance oneself.

Reviews

The film received very positive reviews. The Rotten Tomatoes review collection lists 442 reviews, 97 percent of which are positive. The average rating is 8.3 out of 10 points. The summary praises the "carefully constructed arc of suspense that makes excellent use of the first-class ensemble".

For David Rooney from the Hollywood Reporter , Knives Out is a pleasure from start to finish. It is a playful and contemporary renewal of the crime film, which is typical of the genre with big stars, a Whodunit concept and references to older genre films For example, the Agatha Christie film adaptations, could score. The real star of the film, however, is the script written by Rian Johnson . The story is cleverly planned so that the previous work only pays off at a later point in the film, very entertaining, has a shrewd sense of humor and can use clever and subversive class comments, e.g. B. with regard to immigration policy. The actors would consistently deliver strong performances, in which everyone got their moments, but the performances by Jamie Lee Curtis , Toni Collette , Chris Evans and the grandiose Christopher Plummer are particularly noteworthy. The unexcited Daniel Craig , whose figure of Benoit Blanc is a complete counterpart to Hercule Poirot , and the charming Ana de Armas , on the other hand, form the central thread that holds all actions and figures together. Furthermore, the film has an elaborate production and costume design, whereby the playfulness of the film as well as the late Harlan Thrombey would be reflected in the film set. The family estate, on which a large part of the plot takes place and which is very well staged by the camera, is what Rooney describes as a "cabinet of wonder". Finally, Rooney praises Nathan Johnson's orchestral music , which is a perfect addition to the sometimes funny, exciting and confused film.

Peter Debruge from Variety also judges that the film proves that its genre is still alive in the cinema, even if it has been increasingly displaced from the cinemas by countless television thrillers and crime series. With his work, Johnson honors authors such as Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle and Ruth Rendell , whereby Knives Out is similar to the films A corpse for dessert and All murderers are already there , which would show a fine line between homage and self-parody. This is also one of the biggest surprises at the same time: for Debruge, the film manages perfectly to fuse the crime film and the comedy. It is atypical of the genre that flashbacks do not lead to further puzzles, but rather the unsparing truth and the lies of various characters are revealed. All actors perform well, but, with the exception of Craig, shouldn't make a big impression. Instead, they would be portrayed in an exaggerated manner, also because the story is told from the point of view of the nurse Marta Cabrera . However, this would have enabled Johnson to make statements about prosperity and the right to own land. Debruge also praises the rather British-looking set design, for which production designer Daniel Crank designed the family's property in such a way that it looks as if it had been designed by the main character, a crime writer. In conclusion, Debruge draws that the criminal case is told in the most rounded way.

Andreas Schneider describes the film in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung on January 1, 2020 as a “grandiose cinematic vacillation about Trump America”. The director Rian Johnson has created an "excellent high-profile thriller".

Glenn Lovell from CinemaDope.com is one of the few who is critical of the film. He notes that Knives Out is not going new ways, but moving in the well-known of its genre and staging an investigator who has to find the one truth, as well as many suspects. The focus on the family is represented as a greedy herd of hyena-like offspring, among which only the remarkably pointed Plummer and Curtis and Evans could convince. Lovell criticizes Johnson for making major mistakes in the story and the speed at which it is told, which makes the two-hour run time far too long. In addition, Johnson's attempts to mislead the viewer would be too obvious and the final resolution could not convince either.

Gross profit

With its first preview on November 22nd and 23rd, 2019, Knives Out was able to generate around 2 million US dollars in 936 selected US cinemas. In the opening week, the film entered the US cinema charts at number 2 with grossing US $ 27 million, defended this place in the following week with another 14.15 million and only in the third week with revenues of around nine million US dollars slide to 3rd place. Although the film was only able to enter the German cinema charts at number 4 in the German cinema charts at the beginning of January 2020 with around 250,000 cinema-goers, but still had the best new start of the week, it improved to second place in the following week with around 185,000 cinema tickets sold 40 million US dollars are compared to worldwide revenues of 309.23 million US dollars, of which the film alone grossed 165.36 million in North America. In Germany, the film recorded a total of 1,129,890 moviegoers, generating 10.15 million euros and making it fourth among the most successful films of the year .
