All murderers are already there (Original title: Clue: The Movie ) is an American comedy film directed by Jonathan Lynn from 1985. It is based on the Parker Brothers game Cluedo . Four different film endings were shot, three of which were randomly distributed to the cinemas by the film distributors.
action
The film is set in 1954 in the middle of the McCarthy era . Six people have been invited to a party in a lonely New England country house . The house butler insists that all guests only address each other using pseudonyms . After a seventh guest arrives during dinner, the butler named Wadsworth reveals the real reason for the invitation. All guests are victims of blackmail by a stranger. They all have uncomfortable secrets: Mrs. White's husband was a nuclear scientist who died under mysterious circumstances; Professor Plum lost his license to practice as a psychiatrist after he had an affair with a patient; Mrs. Peacock , the wife of a senator , accepted bribes ; Miss Scarlet runs an illegal brothel ; Colonel Mustard was a war profiteer , and Mr. Green is homosexual for what his State Department job could cost him.
The butler reveals that the last guest to arrive, Mr. Boddy , is the blackmailer. After the light went out briefly, Mr. Boddy was found shot. The search for the murderer unfolds, in the course of which the cook, the housemaid Yvette, a car driver who happened to be passing by, a patrol officer and a singer who wanted to recite a congratulatory telegram are all murdered. All murders are carried out with guns and at the crime scenes of the Cluedo game . Towards the end of the film, the butler explains that he now knows who the killer is. There are three different resolutions at this point, these were randomly distributed by the film distributor during the theatrical screening . For later TV broadcasts or on DVD , the different resolutions follow one another.
- First resolution:
Miss Scarlet is the murderer, her accomplice was the maid Yvette. The butler identifies himself as an FBI agent.
- Second resolution:
Mrs. Peacock is the killer. Again, the butler is really an FBI agent.
- Third resolution:
All the murders were committed by different people: Professor Plum killed Mr. Boddy ; Mrs. Peacock the cook; Colonel Mustard the Motorist; Miss Scarlet the cop; Mrs. White the maid Yvette; while the singer was killed by the butler. It also turns out that the butler is actually Mr. Boddy and that the one killed first was actually the real butler. This time Mr. Green reveals himself as an FBI agent. He shoots the real Mr. Boddy and has his approaching officers arrest all guests for murder.
- Fourth resolution:
The fourth alternative film ending was too bad according to the director. It was cut and, like the first three resolutions, is not included on the DVD.
criticism
The film initially met with little approval from the critics. Roger Ebert said that it makes no difference which ending of the film you see and that the film is mostly not funny. On the part of the audience, after decades of television broadcasts in the USA, a stable fan base developed, within which the film enjoys cult status.
