John Leonard Morris (born October 18, 1926 in Elizabeth , New Jersey , † January 25, 2018 in Red Hook , New York ) was an American composer .

Life

John Leonard Morris grew up in the small town of Independence , Kansas . He started playing the piano at the age of three and was taught by various music teachers before studying music at the Juilliard School . He first met Mel Brooks during the television program Your Show Of Shows , in which Brooks was supposed to rework the script and Morris the music for the film. Then they worked for the first time on the song Springtime For Hitler. together. Brooks was looking for a composer to write the music for his song and was brought to the attention of Morris by Alan Johnson . Although the resulting long-term collaboration was accompanied by tension, Morris composed films for Brooks such as Spring for Hitler , Life Stinks and Mel Brooks' Spaceballs . He also received two Academy Award nominations for the two films The Elephant Man and The Wild Wild West .
