action

The successful composer George Webber is in a midlife crisis , his relationship with his girlfriend Samantha is in crisis. Professionally, he actually achieved everything he wanted. On a drive he suddenly meets his dream woman, unfortunately she is on her way to the altar. When his psychologist asks him where on a scale from 1 to 10 he would classify them, he answers with 11. About the pastor and also about the father of the bride (a prominent dentist who seals George's six teeth) he then learns that the girl of his dreams is called Jenny and is spending her honeymoon in Mexico on the beach in Manzanillo . George flies after without knowing exactly why.

By chance, he saves Jenny's husband David from drowning there when he fell asleep on his surfboard. While David is in the hospital, Jenny shows her appreciation and invites George to an evening for two. In the famous scene of the film, she puts on a record with Maurice Ravel's Boléro and wants to go to bed with George to this music. At first he is enthusiastic, but then he doubts whether Jenny really loves him or whether he is only used for a one-off sexual pleasure. He returns home to Samantha and nothing seems to stand in the way of their happiness together.

Reviews

  • One of the best Blake Edwards films. Good acting by Dudley Moore, Julie Andrews, Robert Webber and Brian Dennehy. Roger Ebert ( Chicago Sun-Times )
  • Blake Edwards has made worse films than this, but the timing of the gags is wrong here, like Dudley Moore's visit to the dentist. Christopher Null (FILMCRITIC.COM)
