When a priceless diamond - called the Pink Panther - was stolen in Lugash , the Sûreté asked inspector Clouseau to investigate. With a whole arsenal of disguises, Clouseau makes his way to Lugash , where he never arrives. His plane is reported missing.

In order to clear up his disappearance, the journalist Marie Jouvet conducts interviews with every person who has ever worked with Clouseau, including Chief Inspector Dreyfus, his servant Cato, Hercule Lajoy and Clouseau's father, who tells of his son's childhood and adolescence and his activities Narrated in the Resistance during the Second World War .

Jouvet concludes that Clouseau must still be alive - and the film also ends with a shot of Clouseau standing on the edge of a cliff.

criticism

“A lovable obituary for the comedian Peter Sellers and his legendary embodiment of the idiot policeman, created from old, partly never used scenes and a newly shot frame story. This 'leftover' use leaves a stale aftertaste, however, because, in addition to some ingenious slapstick gags, it also contains many weak, superfluous scenes that only serve to stretch the film to full length.
