The Pink Panther is an American comedy film from the year 2006 . It is the tenth feature film in the Pink Panther series , and the second of which was not directed by Blake Edwards . Inspector Clouseau is played this time by Steve Martin .

action

The French national soccer coach Yves Gluant is killed with a Chinese poison arrow after a semi-final match against the Chinese national team . When the corpse was examined after the commotion that followed, it was also found that the extremely valuable and famous diamond ring The Pink Panther that Gluant wore has disappeared.

Police chief inspector Dreyfus orders the clumsy and underexposed provincial police officer Clouseau to Paris . Clouseau is not called in because of his qualifications. Rather, Dreyfus plans to draw media attention to Clouseau in order to be able to take the case into his own hands in the background. After Clouseau's failure, he would like to present the solution to the media in order to finally get the "Medal of Honor". Previously, he was already seven times for this award nominated , however, it has never received.

In addition to the secretary Nicole, there is also colleague Ponton, who is to supervise the clumsy clumsy on behalf of Dreyfus. The two first question the usual suspects. Among them are the pop singer Xania, who was Gluants lover, as well as Gluants assistant coach Yuri and the soccer player Bizu.

After these first interrogations there is another murder. Bizu is killed in the locker room with an aimed headshot.

Clouseau's investigation leads him to the Larocque casino. At the same time, a British secret agent was operating there and succeeded in catching and overpowering the notorious gang of gas masks. Since he wants to remain anonymous, he leaves the surprised Clouseau at the crime scene with his agent equipment. Clouseau gratefully accepts the fame wrongly attributed to him by the press and becomes a celebrated hero of France. In addition, he is also nominated for the "Medal of Honor".

When Xania travels to New York , her Clouseau and Ponton follow. For this, Clouseau even tries to learn to speak English, but with little success. They learn that Xania went to a jeweler, supposedly to have a handbag that Josephine Baker owned with gemstones. Clouseau also notes his preference for hamburgers .

Before starting the journey home to Paris, there is a scandal at the airport. Clouseau's bag is swapped on orders from Dreyfus in order to expose him. When checking the hand luggage that has been exchanged, the airport staff finds an arsenal of various weapons.

After the press reacted to these incidents with sensational reports and Clouseau fell out of favor, Dreyfus was able to put his plan into action to remove Clouseau and take over the investigation into the Gluants murder himself. His suspicions immediately fall on the Chinese businessman Le Pen, whom he plans to arrest at a party that evening.

In a press photo of his arrest at the airport, Clouseau can see details that show him the solution to the case. Together with Ponton he gains access to the building in which the evening gala is to take place in disguise. He can prevent the killer from striking again and shooting Xania from the roof during her performance. Just at the moment when he is about to be arrested by Dreyfus' people and the latter wants to present Le Pen to the press present as guilty, Clouseau can expose the real killer, namely Gluants assistant trainer Yuri. This was lured away by Gluant from the Russian military team, so that until now the "Russian Army Paragraph 6-11" applied to him: "Army members are expected to be perfect shooters and to know exactly where the occipital lobe is." This enabled Yuri to carry out the fatal shot on Bizu. But since he was now in the service of the French national team, the rule also applied to him: "According to Paragraph 87223, every French national coach must be familiar with Chinese herbs." This enabled him to produce the deadly poison to kill Gluant. Since Yuri hated his mentor Gluant and Bizu, who knew this, blackmailed Yuri with it, he murdered both Gluant and Bizu.

Clouseau also explains that Xania is in possession of the ring. Gluant had given him to Xania for engagement shortly before he was murdered in the stadium. However, after the murder she did not dare to present the ring in order not to come under suspicion. Now that the murder has been solved, she can bear it as its rightful owner.

In the press photo, Clouseau was able to see the contents of Xania's bag on an X-ray machine. Together with the tip of a suspicious Chinese woman who gave him the tip with the Chinese poison arrow, Clouseau managed to resolve the issue. So he is rehabilitated. Dreyfus, on the other hand, comes away empty-handed and, like several times before, falls victim to one of Clouseau's clumsiness.

background

The film was originally scheduled to be released in summer 2005. However, the test screenings were miserable and the film distribution had the comedy revised before it was released in early 2006.

Clive Owen makes a cameo in the film as Agent 006. When he introduces himself, Clouseau replies, "You just missed the super number." This is a reference to Owen being one of the successors to Pierce Brosnan for the role of James Bond was traded in Casino Royale before the role went to Daniel Craig . Owen's appearance, in which he single-handedly eliminates the dreaded "gas mask gang", is a James Bond parody.

Reviews

Nicole Kühn wrote on film releases that the focus was "clearly on laughing at any price", which "works in some places", in turn seems "too hard" in others. Kevin Kline and especially Steve Martin are "subscribed to the thigh-thumping humor", but Jean Reno seems "far more amusing". Its comedy results from the fact that it "in no way" pretends to be "funny". Emily Mortimer was described as a "bright spot" among the actors, who showed her "comedic side". The bottom line is that the film is "mainly slapstick, where you can have a good conversation depending on your taste and type of humor".

OutNow.CH found the film to be unsuitable “for lovers of subtle and quiet humor”, but managed “surprisingly easily to make a cinema room laugh”, even though it lacked “the charm and class of the original films”.

Cinema said that Steve Martin also succeeded in “just a bland sketch revue”, which was also “remarkably uninspired”. Although some of the slapstick scenes are “quite successful” and Jean Reno “replaces Clouseau's servant Kato at least a bit of color in the gloomy hustle and bustle”, all the gags can be seen “coming for miles”. The film is thus a "well-cast, but pitifully unimaginative slapstick clothes, whose gags do not ignite and the original" panther "sellers would have to perceive as unreasonable".

The lexicon of international films described the film as a “dramaturgically simple remake of Blake Edwards' slapstick comedy of the same name from 1963, amusing above all because of the reluctant leading actor. Even if not all gags ignite, the film offers an entertaining number revue. "
