Roger Rees (born May 5, 1944 in Aberystwyth , Wales , † July 10, 2015 in New York City , New York ) was a British - American actor .

Life

Roger Rees was born in Wales in 1944. He worked as an actor for the Royal Shakespeare Company since 1968 . He received the Olivier Award in 1980 for his portrayal of the title role in the London production of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby , an eight and a half hour play based on the novel Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens . For the production of the same play on Broadway in New York, he received the 1982 Tony Award . He was also nominated for an Emmy for his performance in the television version . Rees starred alongside Kirstie Alley in several episodes of the television series Cheers in the late 1980s and was the Sheriff of Nuttingham in Mel Brooks ' Robin Hood: Heroes in Tights in 1993 .

In addition to his theater work, Rees played roles in numerous television series and, since 2002, in feature films again. His filmography includes around 90 productions.

Roger Rees died on July 10, 2015 of a brain tumor that he was diagnosed with in spring 2014.
