David Legwand (* 17th August 1980 in Detroit , Michigan ) is a retired American ice hockey player , who during his playing career 1997-2016 among others in 1191 games for the Nashville Predators , Detroit Red Wings , Ottawa Senators and Buffalo Sabers in the National Hockey League has contested on the position of the center . Legwand was the first draft election in the history of the Nashville Predators, for which he was active for 15 years and set numerous franchise records.
Career
Legwand began his career with the Plymouth Whalers in the Ontario Hockey League . At the end of the season he had 54 goals and 105 points. He led the rookie statistics in the categories goals (54), assists (51), points (105) and power play goals (18). Because of his outstanding achievements, he was voted Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year in the OHL . He also made it to the OHL First All-Star Team. In the 1998 NHL Entry Draft Legwand was drafted in 2nd place overall by the Nashville Predators . This makes him the first draft pick in franchise history. He stayed in Plymouth for another season and also played a game in the NHL that season.
From the 1999/2000 season he played for the Predators in the NHL. So far he has not been able to meet the great expectations that had been placed in him and for a long time did not manage to score 50 points in any season. During the NHL lockout in the 2004/05 season , David Legwand played for the Swiss club EHC Basel , to whose promotion to the top division he contributed with many scorer points .
In the 2005/06 season , Paul Kariya was the first player to play with a big name by his side. However, Legwand was only able to play 44 games in the regular season due to major injuries and ended up with 7 goals and 26 points. Because of the good chemistry with his strike partners Martin Erat and Kariya, David also played with them in the first line in the 2006/07 season . This season was also Legwand's toughest season for Nashville. For the first time in his NHL career, he exceeded the 20 goals and 60 point mark. He also set a franchise record: no player had scored as many goals for Nashville as he did. On July 2, 2007, his contract was extended by six years (totaling $ 27 million). Due to financial problems, the Predators had to let go of some key players after the 2006/07 season, which also reduced the quality of the squad. Legwand, who lost his strong strike partner, also suffered from the losses, so his scorer points fell to 44 and 42 points in the two following seasons. In the 2009/10 season Legwand was moved to the third line to Jordin Tootoo and Jean-Pierre Dumont . Although Legwand was on the ice in all 82 regular season games, he ended the season with just 11 goals and 38 scorer points.
Legwand was the first player in NHL history to end overtime with a penalty shot through " sudden death ".
Shortly before the trade deadline , Legwand was transferred to the Detroit Red Wings on March 5, 2014 , which gave Patrick Eaves , Calle Järnkrok and a third-round vote in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft to Nashville. After the brief interlude in Detroit, he was signed as a free agent by the Ottawa Senators on July 4, 2014 . During the following season 2014/15, the American completed his 1000th game in the NHL. In the run-up to the 2015 NHL Entry Draft , the Senators including Robin Lehner gave it to the Buffalo Sabers and in return received Buffalo's first-round voting rights for this draft. Legwand ended the 2015/16 season in Buffalo, but did not receive a continuing contract. In December 2016, he announced the official end of his active career.
