Jordin John Kudluk Tootoo ( Inuktitut : ᔪᐊᑕᓐ ᔮᓐ ᑲᑦᓗᒃ ᑐᑐ Juatan Jaan Katluk Tutu , born February 2, 1983 in Churchill , Manitoba ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player . The right winger played over 700 National Hockey League games between 2003 and 2017 . He was active for the Nashville Predators , Detroit Red Wings , New Jersey Devils and the Chicago Blackhawks and primarily embodied the agitator player type . In addition, Tootoo was the first Inuk to play in the NHL.
Career
Jordin Tootoo played four seasons for the Brandon Wheat Kings in the Western Hockey League from 1999 to 2003 . During this time he was selected in the fourth round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft in 98th place by the Nashville Predators . Tootoo was the first Inuit , who by a National Hockey League - Franchise drafted was. He was also the first Inuit to play an NHL game.
He played his first season for the Nashville Predators in the 2003/04 game year , when he made the leap from the Brandon Wheat Kings to the Nashville Predators right away without playing with the Milwaukee Admirals in the American Hockey League (AHL) to have. Tootoo caught up with this, but during the lockout in the 2004/05 season . In the 2005/06 season Tootoo did not make the jump back into the NHL, but first had to play a few games for the Milwaukee Admirals before he was brought back to Nashville. On July 21, 2006, he signed a new two-year contract with the Predators.
In November 2013 Tootoo was put on the waiver and will play for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL until a possible change. At the end of the 2013/14 season Tootoo left the Red Wings and completed the preparation for the 2014/15 season with the New Jersey Devils . They signed him on October 7, 2014.
After two years in New Jersey, his expiring contract was not renewed, so he joined the Chicago Blackhawks as a free agent in July 2016 and signed a one-year contract there. This was subsequently extended, but the attacker was handed over to the Rockford IceHogs , the Blackhawks' farm team from the AHL, at the beginning of the 2017/18 season . There he did not play a single competitive game in the course of the season before his expiring contract was not extended in summer 2018. Tootoo then announced the end of his active career in October 2018. In total, he had completed 765 games in the NHL and recorded 171 scorer points and 1075 penalty minutes.
