Star 80 , also Star 80 - Death of a Playmate is the title of an American drama from 1983 .

Based on a true story filmed Bob Fosse the story of the murdered on 14 August 1980 Playboy - Playmates Dorothy Stratten .

Eighteen-year-old Dorothy Hoogstraten was working for Dairy Queen in her hometown of Vancouver when she met Paul Snider, an artist and pimp. It becomes apparent early on that Paul has a strong tendency to be jealous. Nevertheless, he manages to win Dorothy over. Together they take nude pictures of her and send them to Playboy , whereupon Dorothy is invited to Los Angeles to meet a professional photographer.

Playboy owner Hugh Hefner gives Dorothy a job as a "bunny" at the Playboy Club in Los Angeles. She eventually becomes Playmate of the Month for the August 1979 issue under her new name, Dorothy Stratten.

Paul spends much of the money Dorothy earns, including a. he buys a Mercedes. In the meantime, Dorothy befriends the film director Aram Nicholas. Paul becomes jealous of him and hires a detective who reports that Dorothy and Aram are sleeping together. Paul then buys a shotgun .

Paul asks Dorothy one last chance and eventually convinces her to meet him one last time at their house. At first Paul tries to convince her not to leave him until he finally falls into anger and rapes her. He then shoots Dorothy in the face with his shotgun, killing her with it. Then he points the gun at himself.

Eric Roberts was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role as Paul Snider . Director Bob Fosse received a 1984 Golden Bear nomination .
