Dorothy Stratten (born February 28, 1960 in Vancouver , British Columbia as Dorothy Ruth Hoogstraten , † August 14, 1980 in Los Angeles , California ) was a Canadian actress who was first known as a Playmate .

life and career
She was born Dorothy Ruth Hoogstraten on February 28, 1960 in a Salvation Army hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. She grew up there and attended high school in Coquitlam . Her younger sister is the actress and film producer Louise Stratten .
In 1976, while working part-time at a local diner ( Dairy Queen ), she met promoter and pimp Paul Snider. He persuaded her to send photos of her to Playboy magazine . For this purpose, Snider forged the mother's signature on the model contract, since Dorothy Ruth Hoogstraten was still a minor at the time.
In 1979 she was elected "Miss August" and changed her surname from Hoogstraten to Stratten , in 1980 she was " Playmate of the Year ". In addition to film appearances such as in Galaxina , she also played smaller roles in some television series such as Fantasy Island and Buck Rogers .
On June 1, 1979, she married Paul Snider in Las Vegas . Due to Snider's jealousy, they separated in August 1980.

On August 14, 1980 Paul Snider Dorothy Stratten lured under the pretext of a recent debate in their formerly shared home in West Los Angeles, where he in a fit of rage raped and then a -caliber 12- Mossberg 500 - Pumpgun murdered. The trigger for the murder was the report by the private detective Mark Goldenstein hired by Snider , who had uncovered a relationship between Stratten and the director Peter Bogdanovich . Paul Snider committed suicide immediately after his act with the same weapon suicide .
She was buried in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery .

Reception of her life
Dorothy Stratten's story was made into a TV production in 1981 under the title Death of a Centerfold: The Dorothy Stratten Story and in 1983 in the movie Star 80 - Death of a Playmate by Bob Fosse .
Peter Bogdanovich wrote a book about Dorothy Stratten in 1984 entitled The Killing of the Unicorn - Dorothy Stratten (1960-1980) .
