Buck Rogers is an American science fiction series based on the Buck Rogers - comic strips by Philip Francis Nowlan and Richard Calkins , the 1979 to 1981 in the Universal Studios was created and in two seasons.
action
Astronaut Captain William 'Buck' Rogers is frozen in an accident with his Shuttle Ranger 3 . It drifts in space for 500 years until it is found and thawed by a spaceship of the Dracon Empire in 2491. He is allowed to return to Earth, but is used without his knowledge to figure out how to break through the Earth's defenses. On earth he is initially mistaken for a Draconian spy, but can convince the earth directorate of his innocence and successfully fights the Draconians with the earthly troops. Since then he has been helping pilot Wilma Deering to protect the earth from danger. In the second season, the two, together with their new companion Hawk, are transferred to the Searcher spaceship . Buck is always accompanied by the robot 'Twiki'. This usually wears Dr. Theopolis around, an AI of superhuman intelligence in a round transparent case.
Charisma
The pilot for the series was listed first in March 1979 in US cinemas since, especially in the US, a science-fiction boom, triggered by the first Star Wars -Spielfilm Star Wars prevailed. The cinema adaptation of the Kampfstern Galactica pilot film (also a Larson production) was also very successful in the cinemas. The series itself went on air on US television from September 1979. But as with Kampfstern Galactica , the ratings decreased over time, so that the conception of both series was revised between the seasons. It was not until the spring of 1981 that the second season began to be broadcast. Here, too, the quotas fell short of expectations, so that the series was withdrawn from the program after eight episodes.
In Germany, too, the pilot film was first released in German cinemas in July 1979 and repeated several times on ARD and third programs from 1982 onwards . The then young private broadcaster Sat.1 (then still under the name PKS) began broadcasting 13 selected episodes on May 25, 1985, which were repeated there in 1986. From June 3, 1989, the German private broadcaster RTLplus showed the complete series, which could be seen again in 1990 and 1991. However, they resorted to other voice actors, so that the speakers now change over the course of the series. Since 2000, the series has been shown several times on various pay TV programs and also on free-to-air television.

various
Buck Rogers was first filmed in 1939 as a 12-part matinee serial. The running time per episode was about 20 minutes. Here Buster Crabbe , who was already seen as Flash Gordon , played the role of Buck. This serial has already been broadcast several times in Germany in the third programs . Crabbe also made a cameo on "Vistula," where his role name was "Brigadier Gordon". Another American television series emerged from 1950 with Kem Dibbs in the lead role. From 1951 Dibbs was replaced by Robert Pastane . The recordings in this second series are now considered lost.
Some well-known actors have made guest appearances on the series. Among them Jack Palance (Vistula - The Deadly Menace) and Jamie Lee Curtis (A Deadly Risk).
media
In addition to a series of paperback novels from Luebbe-Verlag and Goldmann , computer games for the series were also available. A comic book series appeared in the USA.
