Gil Gerard (born January 23, 1943 in Little Rock , Arkansas ) is an American actor . He played in several films, including The Man on the Swing , Lost in the Bermuda Triangle and Hooch . However, he was best known for his role as Captain Buck Rogers in the popular American science fiction television series of the same name in the late 1970s .

life and career

Gil Gerard was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1943, to a college professor and traveling salesman. During his school years at Little Rock Catholic High School for Boys, he became interested in acting . In 1960 he attended Maryknoll Seminary in Glen Ellyn, Illinois and played the title role in the production of The Music Man . Gerard later studied at the University of Central Arkansas , but dropped out of college before graduation. Gerard initially embarked on the career of industrial chemist and within a few years rose to the position of regional manager of a large chemical company under the leadership of Governor Winthrop Rockefeller . However, when he was denied further career advancement to Vice President due to his lack of academic degree, he resigned.

He later went to New York, where he studied drama during the day and worked as a taxi driver at night. Finally, he managed to get into the film and television industry through commercials , including as spokesman for the Ford Motor Company . After his first minor roles in the early 1970s in films such as Some of My Best Friends Are 1971 by director Mervyn Nelson and the thriller The Man on the Swing (1974) by director Frank Perry , he established himself with a prominent role as Dr. Alan Stewart in the television series The Doctors from 1974 to 1976 .

He then founded his own production company with partners and made the action comedy Hooch in 1977, his first own feature film as a producer, leading actor and co-author. At this time he also met the director and actor Michael Landon , who first cast him in his series Our Little Farm and a year later in 1978 as the leading actor in his TV drama Screaming Injustice .

After the previous successes and the increased level of awareness, Gil Gerard was finally offered the role of Captain William Buck Rogers in the science fiction television series produced by Glen A. Larson , which was created between 1979 and 1981 . Since then he has been on good terms with his fellow actor and co-partner in the series Erin Gray , who played the role of Colonel Wilma Deering .

In the 1980s and 1990s, Gil Gerard played numerous leading roles in television films and made several guest star appearances in popular American television series such as Charming Wild Brothers! or the Big Easy - roads to sin .

In the 2000s he made several films with director Fred Olen Ray , including the action film Air Rage - Terror in 30,000 Feet . In 2016 he played the role of Bergen Paulsen in the neo-noir comedy film The Nice Guys, directed by Shane Black .

Gerard was married to actress Connie Sellecca from 1979 to 1987 . From this marriage comes a son.
