action

In 1977 in Los Angeles , the famous porn actress "Misty Mountains" was killed in a car accident. It is not clear whether it is an accident or a murder. Mrs. Glenn, Misty's aunt, hires private investigator Holland March to find her niece. She claims to have seen her niece at her house two days after the accident. However, March assumes that it is not about the deceased, but about Amelia Kuttner, who looks like her.

She now hires the contract racket Jackson Healy, who is supposed to keep the people from whom she feels persecuted away. She gives him the address of March, whom Healy seeks out and breaks his left arm. However, motivated by Mrs. Glenn's money, the private detective cannot be withdrawn from the case. When Healy comes home that evening, two armed men are waiting for him, they beat him up and want to find out where Amelia is, but Healy manages to put them to flight.

Since Healy fears that Amelia is in danger, he hires the initially suspicious March, who despite his quirks enjoys a good reputation as a detective, at his own expense. Together they go in search of Amelia and receive new information from one of the young woman's friends, the projectionist Chet. Accordingly, Amelia and Misty Mountains are said to have shot an "experimental film" with a well-known porn producer. However, this film was destroyed in an apartment fire. With March's daughter Holly hidden in the trunk, they go to a party of the said porn producer, where Amelia is supposed to be too. While the drunk March accidentally finds the dead porn producer and tries to hide the corpse together with Healy, Holly meets the killer Blue Face and is able to prevent him from killing Amelia. In a chase, Healy kills Blue Face and Amelia goes into hiding.

Amelia's mother, the senior ministerial official Judith Kuttner, hires Healy and March to find their daughter. Allegedly, Amelia went nuts and believed that her mother wanted to have her killed. Healy and March find out through a note that Amelia wants to meet business people in a hotel. However, there is already the hit man John Boy, who was set on Amelia. As the two detectives want to run away, Amelia falls on her car. They take the unconscious into March's house, where she tells them that the "experimental film" is primarily about clearing up an environmental scandal caused by the automotive industry.

March receives a call from Kuttner's secretary, Tally, who claims her boss is being blackmailed. March is supposed to hand over the ransom with Healy. On the way to the delivery point, the two realize that instead of money there are only scraps of paper in the suitcase they received from Tally. Apparently Judith Kuttner and Tally are working with the criminals. Meanwhile, the killer John Boy appears at March's house and tries to kill Amelia. Holly can stop him until Healy and March return, but they cannot prevent the murder of Amelia and John Boy's escape. The next day, Mrs. Glenn appears and tells again that she had seen her niece, who was believed to be dead. Healy realizes that Mrs. Glenn didn't actually see her niece through a window in her house, but instead saw a projection of the film, and that there must be a copy in Chet's possession. He wants to play the film publicly at the upcoming automobile fair in order to draw attention to the environmental scandal.

Healy and March visit the auto show with Holly and find Chet, who has already been beaten up by John Boy. John Boy and Tally try to secure the film role. Together, March and Healy can assert themselves against the criminals and take on the film role that proves that Amelia's mother was bribed by the automobile manufacturers to assert their interests at the expense of the environment.

Amelia's mother is charged, and at the end of the case, March shows his new partner Healy a flyer advertising their joint private detective agency in a bar .

background

Information about the film was announced for the first time in June 2014. At that time the title, as well as Shane Black as director, Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling  as leading actors and Joel Silver  as producer were named.

The film takes up many true events in the life of Jay Joseph, a Marine Corps veteran who worked as a private investigator and mole for a while in the 1990s . Producer Joel Silver met Joseph in 1999. Joseph told him about some of his adventures as a private detective, which, due to his inexperience, often led him into amusing - but dangerous - situations. Even then, Silver found these stories to be a great basis for a detective film. For example, the phrase "You're the worst detective in the world" that appears in The Nice Guys was actually uttered by Joseph's younger sister after telling her he slept with a woman he should have been monitoring for adultery . Some of the stories told by Joseph found their way through word of mouth in the 2005 film Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang , also written by Shane Black .

Filming of The Nice Guys began on October 27, 2014 with a budget of approximately $ 50 million in Atlanta and Decatur  , Georgia .

The film premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival on May 15, 2016. In the United States, it should originally have hit theaters on June 17, 2016, but production company Warner Bros. decided to swap the release dates of The Nice Guys and its other film, Central Intelligence . This led to The Nice Guys being released there on May 20, 2016. The film opened in Germany on June 2, 2016.

criticism

The film received mostly positive reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes , he holds a 92% rating based on 249 reviews and an average rating of 7.5 / 10. On Metacritic he received 70 points out of 100, based on 51 reviews.

Carsten Baumgardt von Filmstarts praised: "Action, cool sayings and a fast-paced detective story - Last Boy Scout meets Chinatown : Shane Black's brightly colored, daring and refreshingly old-fashioned slapstick crime thriller The Nice Guys is very entertaining." The editorial team of Cinema said: "Shane Black, The director and writer of 'The Nice Guys' is the man who brought humor to the action genre. [...] Back then, it was the wonderfully lively dialogues that made people laugh, but situation comedy is added here. Fortunately, it is dosed in such a way that the heroes do not turn into jokes. Only once or twice, usually when the opponent John Boy (...) shows up, would you wish the action would look a little more serious. But as it is, the crime scene is lost a bit - similar to the Münster 'crime scene', in which crime no longer plays a role. But that hardly bothers, here as there the result is great fun. "

The TV magazine Prisma felt: “Wacky situations and quick-witted dialogues, but also fast-paced fights and explosions, Black cleverly brings together into a whole. The main actors Gosling and Crowe show a great teamwork. The ' driver' and the ' gladiator' fit together like a fist on the eye. Together they fight their way through lovingly furnished backdrops and a convincing reproduction of the 1970s. The viewers can look forward to a humorous crime story. ”The film service judged:“ The fast-paced action comedy combines brisk sayings and hard violence without combining its elements narrative halfway coherently. Equipment, set design and the soundtrack shine as a sympathetic homage to a seemingly free era. "
