Titanic (1996)
The 1996 two-part TV series Titanic tells of the sinking of the luxury liner RMS Titanic on the night of April 14th to 15th, 1912.
action
In first class, the wealthy Isabella Paradine travels back to America to meet her husband, whom she believes she no longer loves. The reason is also on board, the wealthy businessman Wynn Park, with whom Isabella fell in love.
The Allison family also travels on the Titanic with their nanny, Alice Cleaver , who has a dark secret - she once killed her child. However, on the night the ship goes down, she manages to get herself and the 11-month-old Trevor Allison into a lifeboat.
The young day thief Jamie Perse, who stole the ticket for the trip on the Titanic from a penniless man named Mr. Dickie, is traveling in third class. Only one man knows his wrongdoing - the cabin steward Simon Doonan, who blackmailed Jamie and wants to steal the jewelry of the other passengers with him in first class. But Jamie Perse wants to stop stealing because he has fallen in love with the young emigrant Osa Ludvigsen. Both are already planning their future.
backgrounds
The film, which is based on the novel Titanic: An Illustrated History , tries to reproduce the historical drama as authentically as possible despite fiction.
The film tells that Alice Cleaver killed her child. This representation was taken from Titanic: An Illustrated History . Today we know, however, that in 1912 there was both a Miss Alice Catherine Cleaver and a Miss Alice Mary Cleaver. While Alice Catherine Cleaver was traveling aboard the Titanic, Alice Mary Cleaver was the convicted child murderer. Despite the identical first and last name, the two women were not related to each other.
Director Robert Lieberman also had parts of the decks rebuilt, but not nearly as detailed as Cameron. An entire deck is missing , so there is only one landing between the boat deck and the stern. Nevertheless, the effort involved in a television production is remarkable.
In this film, the long shots of the ship were made on the computer and therefore seem quite artificial.
Reviews
- TV Spielfilm described the film as "well cast" .
- The magazine Variety wrote "The series has star cast, but it is trite ... nothing softens the suspicion that these horrible, night sea scenes were filmed in the bathtub." .

The film won an award in the "Best Sound" category at the 1997 Emmy Awards and also received a nomination for "Best Costume Design".
