The Alsumer Berg , also popularly known as the Beecker Halde , is a former rubble dump that rises in Duisburg , directly on the banks of the Rhine , around 50 meters above the Rhine ( 70  m above sea  level ).

location

The Alsumer Berg can be reached via the “Alsumer Steig” road. There is a parking lot at the foot of the mountain. It can also be reached by bike or on foot from the south via the Rhine dike. It is therefore directly on various cycle paths ( Rheinschiene adventure trail , Lower Rhine route , route of industrial culture by bike ).

History of origin

Originally the boat and fishing village of Alsum was located at the mouth of an arm of the Emscher . From 1892, the coal mine , the German Emperor's Union , used the port there to load coal. Due to subsidence , the area against the Rhine continued to sink; the coal port was destroyed by a flood of the Rhine in the winter of 1925/1926 and then backfilled with overburden . The ship operation moved to the northern port of Schwelgern.

During the Second World War , Alsum was almost completely destroyed and then not rebuilt; the remaining residents were relocated from 1954 onwards. The city of Duisburg used the site on the one hand to deposit rubble and debris from the war and on the other hand as an expansion area for industrial companies.

Current condition

Today, the heap has been redesigned as a green area and is a protected landscape area . A memorial cross commemorates the former settlement at the top. From Alsumer Berg you have an excellent view of the industrial backdrop of the steelworks and the Schwelgern coking plant (called Hamborner Ofengruppe), of the Bruckhausen steelworks (from ThyssenKrupp), of the Duisburg-Walsum power plant and of Fritz Schupp's facilities . Because of the fantastic industrial panorama, the mountain is very popular with industrial photographers.
