The Schwelgern coking plant in Duisburg is one of the most modern and largest coking plants in the world.

The builder and owner is Carbonaria Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH & Co., in which Commerz Real Asset Verwaltungsgesellschaft mbH and Hannover Leasing GmbH & Co. KG hold shares. It is operated by the ThyssenKrupp operating company KBS Kokereibetriebsgesellschaft Schwelgern GmbH, which employs 309 people from the previous August Thyssen coking plant (Operations Director Klaus Hofherr ). The main purchaser of the coke produced here is the neighboring ThyssenKrupp steelworks Schwelgern .

chronology

  • 1998 Approval to start construction of a coking plant with dry coke cooling.
  • 1999 Securing of all financing.
  • March 2000 Start of construction on a headland between the Rhine and the TKS factory harbor Schwelgern in Duisburg.
  • April 11, 2000 Application for the construction of a wet coke instead of dry coke extinguishing system. (Construction costs reduced by approx. € 100 million)
  • February 28, 2002 Approval for the construction and operation of a coking plant with coke wet extinguishing on the site in the Schwelgern port .
  • March 26, 2002 Members of the citizens' initiative against environmental toxins DU-Nord e. V. lodge an objection to the change approval with the district government of Düsseldorf.
  • March 12, 2003 Test printing with starting difficulties.
  • March 13, 2003 official start of operation of the first furnace battery after the administrative court in Düsseldorf rejected an urgent application against commissioning.
  • April 16, 2003 Closure of the "predecessor" August Thyssen coking plant.

  • Two wet cooling systems with one extinguishing tower each
  • Two extinguishing water treatment plants
  • Two coke ramps
  • Coke transport
  • Coke classification (screening)
  • Coke loading

White side

  • Tar separation, gas precooler, electric tar filter, gas suction device

  • Claus plants , BTX extraction
  • Tank and loading equipment for raw tar , raw benzene and liquid sulfur
  • Tank and discharge facility for washing oil and caustic soda
  • Cooling system and ventilation system

The coke wet cooling takes place in the newly developed " CSQ process " (Coke Stabilizing Quenching), which is supposed to reduce the dust pollution below the permissible value for coke wet cooling of 50 mg / t coke. The cooled coke is transported to the coke screening plant via conveyor belts . In the coke screening plant, the coke is sorted by size and transported on to the TKS-Schwelgern blast furnace via belts or wagons .

With a newly developed complex process, ammonium hydrogen carbonate is created from washed coke oven gas by adding carbon dioxide , which then serves as a starting material for the production of nitrogen fertilizers and foaming agents for plastics and porous ceramics . This process will be tested in a new pilot plant in 2016.

Specialty

In contrast to old industrial buildings, this coking plant was designed according to a color concept by the color philosopher Friedrich-Ernst von Garnier . There are light green tones with accents of blue and yellow. These colors have optically integrated the industrial giant into the river landscape.

Emissions

The pollutant emissions of all large industrial companies and power plants are published in the European Pollutant Emissions Register (via the German portal Thru.de).

Emissions below the reportable quantity threshold are listed in the table with "<" next to the limit value.
