The Brockenscheidt dump is a mining dump in Waltrop . With a height of only 15 meters and an area of 6.5 hectares, it is one of the smallest heaps in the Ruhr area .

history

The Waltrop colliery was built shortly after 1900 on the green field . During the first years of use, the tailings were initially heaped up for temporary storage near the colliery and then transported to the dismantled areas as a backfill . After 1920, with the increasing mechanization of the mining industry in the Ruhr area , the production volumes increased and with it the volume of waste rock , so that a mine dump was created.

In 1979 the Waltrop colliery was closed. The dump was used for filling up until 1985, this time by the mines Minister Achenbach from Lünen and Monopol from Bergkamen . The elongated Table Mountain was continued to the south.

Traditional deciduous trees such as birch , sycamore maple and willow were planted in the older area of the heap . In the newer area, various substrates were placed on the surface and selected local weed mixtures and woody plantings were made, and open spaces were left for the settlement of spontaneous vegetation . The long-term field test by the Universities of Duisburg-Essen and Bochum observes the settlement of fauna and flora under the extreme conditions of a dump.

Track tower

Since 2000 the "gauge tower" has been located on the highest point of the plateau. The artist Jan Bormann from Castrop-Rauxel built the tower from 1000 meters of used laths . The wooden lattice structure in the shape of a truncated pyramid has a viewing platform at a height of 12 meters , the edge of which is illuminated with stray lights in the evening. Three slats as a structure indicate the top of the complete pyramid shape. In total, the tower is 20 meters high, the floor area is 25 by 25 meters. It offers a good view of the former Waltrop colliery, the Colani egg in Lünen-Brambauer and large parts of the eastern Ruhr area.

On the north side, a street axis is aimed directly at the tower, on the south side a staircase, created from rails found on the site, leads up to the Haldentop.

Way of the Cross

Since 2007, the Way of the Cross by the Waltrop artist Paul Reding has led to the old part of the heap. It was set up by the St. Marien Waltrop Catholic Workers' Movement . At seven stations there are man-high figures cut from steel, which depict various situations from Jesus' Way of the Cross.
