The Sachsen heap is located near the Sachsen colliery in Heessen . With its three peaks, it represents a dump landscape.

The Sachsen colliery was operated from 1912 to 1976, and the deaf rock extracted there was deposited on the nearby mine dump . This old part represents the easternmost peak of the dump landscape.

During the IBA Emscherpark, the colliery itself was redesigned to become the NRW Eco-Center . In 2000, the Ruhr Regional Association (RVR) then acquired the 16.5-hectare dump landscape in the immediate vicinity and designed it in accordance with the motto of the industrial park “Working in the Park”. Nature was gently given space again, while relics of the former colliery were integrated as biotopes, such as the cooling tower foundations as rain retention basins. As a local recreation area, the Halde offers a barbecue area, many hiking and cycling trails, benches and an area for mountain bikers. The RVR Ruhr Grün offers guided tours, industrial nature excursions and moonlight hikes on the Saxony heap.

To the east is the wooded Alte Halde , which exceeds its surroundings by 32 meters (105 meters above sea level) and is the highest of the three peaks. At the foot of the heap, the overburden made of dark, coarse slate is still visible, on top it is a thick birch forest. Stone stairs were installed on this Kegelberg, next to which the mountain bike trail runs.

To the west is the panorama dump, also known as "Heessens Dachstübchen", which is not forested and has a spiral ascent path. From here you have an unobstructed view of the surrounding area, but it is only 15 meters high (83.5 meters above sea level). Most of it consists of rubble from the former colliery buildings. The Heimatverein Heessen has set up four obelisks here, which provide information about objects in the vicinity. In the year of the Capital of Culture Ruhr.2010 , an eight-meter-high steel cross, the "Saxon Cross", was erected on the summit during the Hammer Local Hero Week by the Sachsen-Kreuz association.

The wind pointer dump lies between the two , almost 25 meters above the surrounding area (92.5 meters above sea level). Above, the sculpture "Windzeiger - Haldenblick" by the artist Jens J. Meyer from Essen is mounted on the foundation of an old wind turbine. On the 15-meter-high mast, the 20-meter-long pointer, equipped with a white cloth on one side, rotates in the prevailing wind direction. After the tree population was able to grow here for many years, the sculpture no longer fulfills the function of a landmark .
