Tiger and Turtle - Magic Mountain is a landmark modeled on a roller coaster on Heinrich-Hildebrand-Höhe in Angerpark in Duisburg - Angerhausen . The large sculpture is a work of art by Heike Mutter and Ulrich Genth , which was developed as part of the Ruhr.2010 Capital of Culture .

description

The dump named after the Duisburg local researcher Heinrich Hildebrand consists among other things of the slag dump of the former zinc smelter MHD Sudamin GmbH " Metallhütte Duisburg ", which was closed in August 2005.

With the galvanized steel as a building material, the sculpture has a historical reference to the location. The structure with a footprint of 40 by 41 meters is a little more than 20 meters high (top edge looping). It can be done in full except for the looping, which means that you have to walk back in both directions to the entry point. Since it is less than a meter wide, there are always bottlenecks, especially on the steeper sections, so a maximum of 195 visitors are allowed at the same time. The maximum reachable point is 13 meters high.

The dump rises 35 meters above the surrounding street level (67 meters above sea level), so that a visitor to the sculpture from a height of 48 meters (80 meters above sea level) can see the surrounding (industrial) landscape such as the Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann in Hüttenheim , the Duisburg city center, the Rhine and in good visibility and especially in the dark as far as Düsseldorf (including the airport , Rheinturm and the illuminated pylons of the Rheinkniebrücke ).

Technical specifications

The total length of 220 meters (divided into two walkable sections of 140 and 60 meters) is covered with 349 grating as steps. 698 posts, 349 cross beams and 17 supports support the structure. The main support tube and supports have a diameter of 323.9 mm. The total weight of the large sculpture is 90 tons. 220 steps can be climbed. For security reasons, the number of visitors is limited, the looping area is cordoned off and access is closed depending on the time and weather conditions. At night the sculpture is illuminated with 880 LED lamps in the handrails.

development

In spring 2009, the City of Duisburg launched a competition to design the landmark. The design by Heike Mutter and Ulrich Genth emerged as the winner from among four submissions. Other participants in the competition were the artists Rita McBride , Michael Sailstorfer and Stephen Craig . Rita McBride's design for the Delicate Arch was realized as part of the Ruhr.2010 project B1 | A40 - The beauty of the great road at the Kaiserberg motorway junction.

Construction of the large sculpture foundations began in August 2010. The individual construction phases were carried out by German and Dutch companies.

On November 12, 2011, the sculpture was opened in the presence of the former managing director of Ruhr.2010 Fritz Pleitgen , the then Mayor of Duisburg, Adolf Sauerland , the artists and sponsors as well as others involved in the project.

financing

The construction costs totaled two million euros, 1.4 million were planned.

The sculpture was funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and as part of the ecology program in the Emscher-Lippe region (ÖPEL). Further funds came from state funds for the European Capital of Culture Ruhr.2010 and from private sponsors (Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann, Vallourec & Mannesmann Tubes, Sparkasse Duisburg and Stadtwerke Duisburg). Several companies involved in the construction process waived all or part of their expense allowances.

Artwork

The artists describe their work as follows:

Tiger and Turtle uses the dialectic of speed and standstill inherent in it to refer to the upheaval situation in the region and its change through demolition and restructuring. By reducing the expectations attached to the image of the roller coaster to absurdity, the sculpture reflects its own role as a potential supra-regional landmark, which is inevitably appropriated as an image. It contrasts the logic of eternal growth with an absurdly contradictory structure that defies unambiguous interpretation. "
