Wilhelm Hornbostel

Wilhelm Hornbostel (* 1943 in Ratzeburg ) is a German classical archaeologist .

Hornbostel studied Classical Archeology, Classical Philology , Ancient History and Art History at the Universities of Cologne , Bonn and Marburg . In 1967 he received his doctorate in Marburg with a dissertation on the iconography of the god Sarapis . He then worked as an assistant at the Universities of Hamburg and Giessen . In 1973 he became head of the antique collection of the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg , which he was director from 1988 until his retirement (2008).

Until 2019 Hornbostel was chairman of the association "Friends of Prussian Palaces and Gardens", which supports the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation in Berlin-Brandenburg . He is also a board member of the Ohm Foundation in Hamburg. He has been an expert for the NDR's art and antiques show Lieb & Teuer since 2001.
