The hall house

The North Germany dump is a tailings pile of the Niederberg mine in Neukirchen-Vluyn .

The backfilling of the heap by the mine was completed in March 2001. The heap, which is considered a burning heap, has an area of 81 hectares and is 102 meters high at its highest point. 80 million tons of rock are stored in the heap.

Facilities

The heap can be seen from the Autobahn 57 . Above all, the “Hallenhaus” on one of the peaks catches the eye. The skeletal house in the form of a steel frame is a work of art by the Dutch group “Observatorium”, which also designed other landmarks and objects in the Ruhr area. The house marks several functions in the Niederrhein Landscape Park : it welcomes travelers on the surrounding motorways and is a meeting and event location that can be rented for private and business events from the Ruhr Regional Association (RVR).

Part of the heavenly staircase with 359 steps

The heap also has a stairway to heaven, with which the Haldentop can be reached directly. 52 meters in altitude are overcome. Sometimes the stairs rise like a bridge from the ground in order to run in a straight line and to protect existing vegetation like a reed area.

The redesign was completed at the end of April 2010 with the opening of the approximately 600 meter long panorama path. In the evening it is marked with 250 LED lamps embedded in the floor . The light-emitting diodes in the handrail of the heavenly staircase enable ascent and descent even in the dark. In addition, the hall building is illuminated.

Activities and events

Paragliding on the practice area

The local sports club has signposted a route that is interesting for many endurance athletes and includes three levels of difficulty. The longest and hardest route, which is signposted with the color black, is seven kilometers in length and 206 meters in altitude must be overcome. In addition, there is a slight increase in the slope as a particular difficulty that cannot be climbed by bike. There is also a red and a blue route - the latter, however, does not reach the Haldentop.

In addition, the dump is used by riders, downhill riders, hikers and walkers, paraglider pilots, hang gliders and model pilots. The "Fliegerfreunde Niederrhein" run the flight operations for paragliding.

Radio amateurs use the mining dump in Northern Germany for field days . In the mining and amateur radio project, the northern Germany dump has the mining activity number DL119.

The Dong Open Air Festival has been taking place on the Halde every summer since 2003 .
