history

After the closure of the last mine in Rheinhausen ( Diergardt 1967 and Mevissen 1973) private collectors and former miners came together and, with the support of the sponsor Götzen, created a collection of around 500 exhibits.

Joachim Schulze opened the mining collection in the atrium of the former Diergardt colliery on June 29, 1983.

In 1993, a large part of the collection and the entire archive were destroyed in a fire in the Götzen company's administration building. In 1994 a revised collection was reopened. In 1998, Joachim Schulze, the driving force behind the collection, was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his more than 30 years of activities in support of charitable organizations and the collection and maintenance of mining history .

In 1998 the Götzen company went bankrupt , the collection housed there had to move to the premises of the Lower Rhine Caritas workshops, which were located on the former coal storage area of the Diergardt colliery. To further safeguard the collection, the association "Rheinhauser Mining Collection - Association for the History of Mining in the Duisburg Area" was founded. It has been recognized as a non-profit organization since 1999.

In 2004 Caritas registered its own needs for the premises, the collection had to move again.

The move will be completed in August 2007, and the collection has been on display at its current location ever since.
