The Rhine Prussia port was built between 1906 and 1908 as an additional transshipment point on the left bank of the Rhine at Rhine kilometer 781.1, in order to accommodate the Rheinpreußen colliery in Homberg and the Friedrich Heinrich colliery in Kamp-Lintfort , connected with its own track connection , the Friedrich Heinrich-Rheinpreußen- Port to handle the coal shipment.

Despite violent protests by the port inspector in Duisburg-Ruhrort , a 500 m long and 75 m wide harbor basin was built. The port is connected to the Rhine by a 240 m long canal . A lift bridge leads across the canal to a former dump site , where the national coal reserve was once stored.

The INEOS plant in Rheinkamp currently uses the port as a tank farm and transshipment facility and the eastern section of the rail connection as a works railway.

Homberg lift bridge

The lift bridge is the oldest of its kind in Duisburg. The structure is four meters wide, 75 meters long, 26 meters of which is the movable middle section, which is lifted to allow ships to enter and leave the harbor, especially at higher water levels.

It should be canceled.

It has been closed several times since 2016 and has been released again and again after poor renovations. The final closure of the bridge over the port has continued for an indefinite period since November 2017.

The Rhine Prussia port is part of the route of industrial culture . The Homberg lift bridge was once part of the EU-funded Rhine Cycle Route (EV15) - along the Rhine "from the source to the mouth - 1233 km of cycling fun with a view of the river".
