The city ​​port of Lünen is the inland port of the city of Lünen (North Rhine-Westphalia) on the Datteln-Hamm Canal (DHK).

history

While the Datteln-Hamm Canal was being built in Lünen in 1912, planning began for the construction of an urban port for the transport of the coal extracted from the Victoria colliery. In 1914 the coal port went into operation.

Until 1958, the port was also used for the cargo handling of the aluminum works (Lippe Plant) of the United Aluminum Works and the Haumann sawmill. This was further expanded with the extension of the industrial trunk line branching off from the Lünen-Süd DB station via Hüttenwerke Kayser AG to the port. Between 1961 and 1967, Lüner Hafenumschlag- und Speditions GmbH operated the port as a public transshipment company. In 1967 the Stadtwerke Lünen then took over the operation with the Stadthafen Lünen GmbH founded for this purpose.

Since its inauguration, the business area of ​​the Lünen city harbor has developed from a pure coal transshipment point to an expansion to a storage business for various steel products and a recycling location with over 214 types of waste approved according to the European Waste Catalog (EWC).

The port in numbers

The total area of ​​the port area is 19 hectares. The indoor storage area offers 17,000 m², the open space 81,000 m². On the fortified quay wall of 936 meters there are twelve berths, eight unloading places and six cranes. Two track scales and a 60 ton vehicle scale are available.

In the case of iron and steel, mainly coils, semi-finished products, wire rod, bright steel, stainless steel sheets and copper are handled; in the case of bulk goods, mainly coal, grain, building materials, glass, recycled goods, fly ash and pig iron. In 2008, around 963,000 tons were handled by 582 ships.

Users of the city port can reach the West German canal network and the Rhine via the Wesel-Datteln Canal . There is a port siding for rail traffic. Motor vehicles and trucks can use the nearby federal highway 236 and federal highway 2 .

Expansion of the Datteln-Hamm Canal between the estuary up to and including the Hamm city port for access by 110-meter-long large motor freight ships and 185-meter-long push convoys . These should be able to drive in oncoming traffic with an unloading depth of 2.80 meters. Sections are currently only passable in one-way traffic, which leads to longer waiting times.

In the course of this expansion, many bridges that cross the Datteln-Hamm Canal will be raised, as both the ships have become taller over the past 100 years and subsidence has lowered the level of the roads. A passage under the bridges can currently only take place if the ship is taking on ballast.

An enlarged reversible basin was completed in 2010 at the level of the city port of Lünen. The total of 11 kilometers of the Datteln-Hamm Canal, which should be expanded, were completed up to the turning basin. Due to the lack of an upgraded section to Hamm, the turning basin is also used as a landing stage for waiting ships.
