The four descent structures at the junction of the Rhine-Herne Canal from the Dortmund-Ems Canal are known as the Waltrop lock park . The lock park is located at the Rhine-Herne canal kilometer RHK km 45.6 and DEK km 14.7 in Waltrop , adjacent to the eponymous district of Henrichenburg in the city of Castrop-Rauxel .

Parts of the site belong to the Westphalian Industrial Museum ; Historical canal ships, ship engines and models are exhibited there. The Duisburg-Meiderich Water and Shipping Authority also operates an exhibition hall there .

The oldest building is the old Henrichenburg ship lift . It was built between 1894 and 1899 to connect the Dortmund harbor and was the first of its kind in Germany. With the construction of the Rhine-Herne Canal, an economy lock was planned and completed in 1914. After the new ship lift went into operation in 1962 , the old lift was shut down in 1969. In 1989 a new large lock was built. In 2005 the new elevator was also shut down due to technical defects. Today all shipping traffic is handled through the new lock.

All historical descent structures are under monument protection. All four structures can be visited.
