Gelsenkirchen lock

The Gelsenkirchen lock belongs - from the Rhine - to the third of the five canal stages of the Rhine-Herne Canal . It is located in Gelsenkirchen just before the city port of Gelsenkirchen at kilometer 23.32 of the canal and bridges a height difference of 6.20 m.

The current lock group was built between 1980 and 1985 and consists of two locks. Both have a usable length of 190 m. The north lock is designed for a usable width of 12.10 m, the usable width of the south lock is 11.94 m. Both locks have lifting gates on the upstream side and stemmed gates on the downstream side . It takes 55 seconds to open the upper gate and only 35 seconds to open the lower gate.

The canal stage also includes a pumping station for water retention in the Rhine-Herne Canal.

The Gelsenkirchen lock group is part of the Route of Industrial Culture .
