Gelsenkirchen harbor
The port of Gelsenkirchen is located on the Rhine-Herne Canal . It is an important transshipment point for mineral oil products and the second most important inland port for grain in North Rhine-Westphalia . The total throughput in the last ten years averaged over two million tonnes (t), of which around 1.2 million t were water throughput, per year. The port is operated by the Gelsenkirchener Logistik-, Hafen- und Servicegesellschaft , a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Gelsenkirchen .
The port was opened on July 13, 1914. Today the port area comprises 1.2 million m² of total area and two docks of the commercial and industrial port with a water area of 117,800 m².
