After the financial problems of FC Schalke 04 , Stadtwerke Gelsenkirchen took over a 50 percent stake in the Veltins Arena in 2009 in return for limited partner shares of 15 million euros and a loan of 10.5 million euros .

Stadtwerke Gelsenkirchen has a 16.6% stake in Emscher-Lippe-Energie GmbH, a regional energy supplier. Emscher-Lippe-Energie GmbH has been leasing the electricity and gas networks in the city of Gelsenkirchen that are owned by Stadtwerke Gelsenkirchen since 1999.

Deaths

On January 5, 2019, a five-year-old girl drowned in the learning pool in Gelsenkirchen's Zentralbad.

On June 11, 2019, a two-year-old boy was found lifeless in a pool in the outdoor and indoor swimming pool Sport-Paradies .
