Marola's boat that won the Palio

Marola is one of 13 villages that make up the city of La Spezia . The place is located on the Gulf of La Spezia in Liguria on the Ligurian Sea . Marola is on the road from La Spezia to Porto Venere . In the mountains above Marola there are quarries of the exclusive natural stone Nero Portoro .

A Roman settlement is said to have been located in Marola in the past , as black and white marble tiles were found, which presumably come from a spa house. In the 18th century human remains with helmets and swords were discovered in a tomb. It is believed that the Romans also used the place as a naval port during the republican era and the place was a city during the imperial era. There are two churches in the village.

Between Marola and La Spezia lies the La Spezia naval arsenal , which is surrounded by high stone walls. The town of Marola and the further coast are separated by the arsenal and the villagers of Marola hope that if the arsenal is given up, the coast will be returned to public use.

Sports

The Palio del Golfo, a competition between the surrounding towns, has been held every year since 2000. The municipality of Marola leads with seven victories and the town of Fezzano won once .
