The Dorsten locks belong - from the Rhine - to the third of the six canal stages of the Wesel-Datteln Canal (WDK) at canal kilometer 30.48 in Dorsten .

The lock group overcomes a height difference of 9.00 meters. Both locks are operated by the lock operators in the on-site control stands, the pumping station is operated by the remote control center (FZW) of the Duisburg-Meiderich Water and Shipping Authority in Datteln, which was commissioned in 1984 .

History, design and capacity

The large lock was completed in 1928 and has lifting gates at both ends. It is 222 meters long, 12 meters wide and is designed for a draft of 2.80 meters, the capacity is 26,500 m³. In the past, three barges could be passed through with one tug at the same time. Today two, depending on the size, up to four European ships can be passed through in one lock process. The maximum ship or formation length for the large chamber is 186.5 m in formation and 135 m for individual vehicles.

The small lock was built in 1968. It is 112 meters long, just as wide and deep as the large lock and has a capacity of 14,600 m³. It is closed with a lifting gate on the upper water and a sliding gate on the lower water. The maximum ship or formation length for the small chamber is 110 m.

The maximum ship width for vehicles or formations for both compartments is 11.45 m. The maximum lock width for both chambers is 12 m.

A double lock, i.e. a lock process with a boat trip to the mountain and then to the valley, takes about 60 minutes for the large chamber and 30 minutes for the small chamber. On average, around 90 ships are handled at both locks each day.

There is a station of the Dorsten water police at the Dorsten lock group. Electric keys for charging stations can be purchased at the lock. There are charging stations on the Dorsten city line; this is below the lock group (not in the outer harbor) between the sports boat harbors. The Ruhr area cycle path runs along the north side of the large lock . The intermunicipal industrial park Dorsten / Marl begins to the south and above the Dorsten Canal.

Pumping station

The return pumping station, which has existed since the canal was commissioned in 1931, is initially used to pump the lock water that has drained into the lower water back into the upper water. In addition, Rhine water can be pumped in the direction of the Dattelner Meer along the entire pumping station chain of the WDK to feed the Herne / Datteln-Münster apex section of the West German canal network. Four pumps are operated with 3800 and one pump with 5000 liters per second. A maximum of four pumps run at the same time.
