The stockpile Rheinpreußen is 74 m above ambient level heaped Bergehalde in Moers - Meerbeck . It has a total height of 103 m above sea level. NN. The Ruhr Regional Association has been the owner since 2001 .

The overburden comes from the nearby Rheinpreußen colliery , which was the first mine on the left bank of the Rhine. This is also one of the first green heaps in the Ruhr area .

In order to develop the dump into a landmark , the Ruhr Regional Association decided at the end of 2005 to erect a 30 meter high tower in the shape of a miner's lamp on the summit . The design for this comes from the artist Otto Piene .

Konrad Gappa, who saw Otto Piene's presentation of the landmark in Duisburg, took the initiative to build the landmark mining lamp. Together with miners and smelters as well as local residents, he founded the 'Landmark Mining Lamp Support Group'. In long-term discussions, this convinced the city of Moers, the Wesel district , the Ruhr Regional Association and the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia to realize the artistic representation of a mining region, which is unique for the district and worldwide. The 100 personal and more than 2000 corporate members of the support group show the great public interest, supported by coal and steel companies and banks, especially ThyssenKrupp AG , which took over the planning free of charge and thus brought the funds raised to almost 500,000 euros. Today, for example, the sponsorship group pays the costs of lighting and looking after the world's largest work of art.

In 1998, as part of the Emscher Park International Building Exhibition, Kultur Ruhr GmbH decided to artistically develop some of the mine dumps into landmarks. The director of the Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg, Christoph Brockhaus, commissioned the artist Otto Piene to install the light as planned. The artist's idea of illuminating the entire heap in red was, however, limited to the northwest side.

The first part of the work was completed on March 30, 2006. On August 8, 2007, the light was on for the first time in the modeled miner's lamp. The light test took place in the presence of Otto Piene. Since then, 35 light towers bathe an area of around 8,000 square meters in the dump in a red light.

The landmark was inaugurated on September 17, 2007 in the presence of the artist and around 1,500 participants. Almost 1,000 visitors to the landmark on the weekends show the great public interest. The light tower can be visited, an internal staircase leads to the 9 m high viewing platform. From there you can see the industrial landscape on the Lower Rhine and the confluence of the old and new Emscher into the Rhine .

The work of art and the sponsorship group received special recognition from the fact that Konrad Gappa was one of the twelve culturally committed German citizens whom Federal President Horst Köhler invited to his 2008 summer party. In the park of Bellevue Palace , Gappa was able to present the landmark to the Federal President and the more than 3,000 guests in picture and sound.

A similar dump art sculpture is located in Thuringia near Ronneburg on the Schmirchauer Höhe .
