The Halde Schwerin is the slag heap of 1,967 disused former bill count Schwerin in Castrop-Rauxel in the district Schwerin . Today, at 151 m above sea level, it is the highest elevation in Castrop-Rauxel and towers over the highest natural elevations of the Castrop Heights at 135 m .

history

East stairs of the Schwerin dump. The material of the stairs is made of steel slabs.

After approval to operate the dump was granted in 1976, the final operating plan was concluded in 1983. A year later, the heap won the "Federal Competition for Exemplary Design of Industrial Sites". The Ruhr Area Municipal Association acquired the dump in 1989.

The artificial dump was redesigned as part of the Emscherpark International Building Exhibition . A huge sundial has been on the summit since 1993 . This art installation was built by Jan Bormann and consists of 24 stainless steel steles positioned in a circle. In addition, the north-facing clock contains a triangle ( polos ) aligned parallel to the roof . It has a diameter of 16.5 and a height of 10 meters.

Sunlight, time and energy should be experienced in the artificially designed landscape. Manfred Walz and Georg Kiefer designed the concept for this. In the middle of the summit plateau, the axes of the staircases, oriented towards the cardinal points, cross: the axis of nature from (pit) wood on the south side to the railway sleeper in the north and the industrial axis from the steel slab in the east to the railway track in the west. The different materials are intended to reflect the natural , human and industrial history of the area by showing the raw material and product.

The plateau used to have a good overview of the Emschertal. Due to the tall trees growing in the lower part of the heap, the view is now very limited.

The Schwerin dump is part of the Route of Industrial Culture .
