Schwerin is a district of Castrop-Rauxel in the Recklinghausen district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The place Schwerin originally had the name Westhofen , a common name in Westphalia for a place west of a larger town. In the west it bordered on old Castrop and in the east on the Frohlinde farmers .

In 1878 the Graf Schwerin colliery was built in Westhofen . By building colony houses for the miners, Westhofen grew into a small town with a market square, shops and restaurants. In 1936 the place was officially renamed Schwerin.

After the Second World War, many Silesians from the area of the former Neurode district settled in Castrop-Rauxel. Due to a very active adherence to the old traditions of their homeland, Castrop-Rauxel was a kind of center of the displaced people from Neurode in the 1950s and 1960s, which the city took as an opportunity to give the newly designed market square in Schwerin the name Neuroder Platz .

The Graf Schwerin colliery was shut down in 1967, the coking plant of the colliery only in 1975.

Worth mentioning

Instead of “I live in Schwerin”, “I live in Schwerin” is used. This form of Ruhr German is derived from the fact that the miners worked at the Schwerin colliery and so also lived on Schwerin. The expression is probably also related to the elevated location, in contrast to the rest of the Castrop city area. From almost all directions it goes uphill in the direction of the district. The Schwerin dump At 151 m above sea level, it is the highest elevation in Castrop-Rauxel and towers over the highest natural elevations of the Castrop Heights with a good 135 m .
