Tetrahedron in Bottrop

The dump event Emscherblick , or tetrahedron for short , is a walk-through viewing terrace in the form of a three-sided pyramid on the Beckstraße dump in the Batenbrock district of Bottrop . The steel construction with a side length of 60 m rests on four 9 m high concrete pillars and is located on the top of the approx. 120 m above sea level high dump on Beckstrasse. The heap has a prominence of about 90 meters to the surrounding level. On a clear day you can see the landmark of the city of Bottrop from Essen main station . Like other heaps of the Ruhr area , the tetrahedron is part of the Route of Industrial Culture .

Building

The viewpoint was designed as a landmark of the IBA Emscher Park by the architect Wolfgang Christ from Darmstadt in cooperation with the structural engineer Klaus Bollinger (Bollinger + Grohmann, Frankfurt) and built by Rüter GmbH, Dortmund. The Emscherblick dump event opened on the day of German reunification in 1995.

The construction consists of 210 tons of steel and pipes with a total length of 1500 m. It rests on four reinforced concrete columns so that it is set off from the ground and, especially at night, when the tetrahedron is lit, it looks like it is floating. The Düsseldorf artist Jürgen LIT Fischer designed the light sculpture Fractal at the tip of the tetrahedron. The top of the stockpile was modeled as a lens-shaped depression based on a design by Wolfgang Christ, so that the industrial and urban landscape of the northern Ruhr area is no longer visible from the center of the depression.

Stairs and viewing platforms at different heights are suspended in the main structure : the first platform at a height of 18 m can be reached via a staircase built as a suspension bridge; the steep climb leads to the second platform at a height of 32 m. The third platform at a height of 38 m consists of a ring with a diameter of 8 m and an incline of 8 °; it can be reached via a spiral staircase. The stairs and platforms are movably suspended in the construction on steel cables, which can lead to fluctuations in stronger winds. The platforms and stairs consist of light grids and perforated panels with a clear view downwards.

Dump and landmark

The dump is accessed by a dense network of paths and can be climbed at various angles. The direct way up is via a staircase with 387 steps. The dump consists of dead rock .

Due to its exposed position and altitude, the tetrahedron is an important landmark in the region. From above you have a wide panoramic view of the Ruhr area . Four panorama boards describe the view. The Bottrop Alpine Center is located on the neighboring dump . When visibility is good, the Rhine Tower in Düsseldorf, about 40 km away , can be seen.

Mathematical structure

Sierpinski pyramid

The object resembles a Sierpinski pyramid, the three-dimensional analog of the Sierpinski triangle . In the first step, the tetrahedron is divided into four smaller tetrahedra, between which an octahedron forms in the middle . In the second step, these four tetrahedra would be divided in the same way - in the sculpture, however, one of the three lower tetrahedra remains in the first step.

Stone arrangements "Aliens"

Temporary campaign 2011, the original shapes can still be seen on the right

By rearranging different colored gravel stones from 2004 to the beginning of 2009, Fred Fischer from Bottrop placed several large stereotypical representations of "extraterrestrials" below the tetrahedron. After other landmarks from the time of the IBA Emscher Park, for example the Brockenscheidt heap of the Waltrop colliery with the gauge tower by the artist Jan Bormann, were redesigned by citizens, the Ruhr Regional Association requested an expert opinion in 2008, according to which this was not legally possible was allowed. After a passionate debate in the public media about the pros and cons of the unauthorized actions of individual citizens, the Ruhr Regional Association had the 'figures' undermined on February 18, 2009.

In August 2011, Fred Fischer revived the aliens with the approval of the Ruhr Regional Association. The action was based on an agreement between the artist and the RVR. The RVR had promised to find another location for the art installation. After this was unsuccessful, an agreement was reached on a temporary action with textile webs at the original square.

The tetrahedron in the film

The Bottrop tetrahedron is the setting for some scenes in Dietrich Brüggemann's film Renn, if you can .

Tetrahedron flight of stairs

The Bottrop Tetrahedron Staircase is a DLV- approved run that has been held annually since 2013 and has a maximum running distance of 11 km with 1847 steps.
