John Wilbye

John Wilbye (born March 7, 1574 in Diss , Norfolk , † September or October 1638 in Colchester , Essex ) was an English composer in the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque .

Life

Wilbye had been a musician in the home of Earl Thomes Kytson and his family at Hengrave Hall Castle in Suffolk since 1598 . He lived and worked here until 1628, after which he moved to Colchester, where he also served a daughter of Count Kytson as a house musician until his death.

Wilbye is considered one of the most outstanding composers of his time in England. His most famous madrigals include Draw On, Sweet Night , Sweet Honey Sucking Bees , Weep, Weep, Mine Eyes and Adieu, Sweet Amaryllis. Many of his works remained popular long after his death and were performed over and over again. Mount Wilbye on Alexander I Island in Antarctica has been named after him since 1961 .
