Thomas Weelkes
Thomas Weelkes (* 1576 ; † 1623 ) was an English composer and organist of the late Renaissance .
Weelkes was organist at Winchester College between 1598 and about 1601 and received a Bachelor of Music degree from Oxford . In 1603 he got a lucrative position at the cathedral in Chichester , composed church music and married a wealthy woman. His recently published book of sonorous madrigals was one of the most important in the English tradition. He was dismissed from church service for improper behavior and drinking . Weelkes' importance in English music history is based on madrigals as well as on his church music . In his madrigal work, he differed from the contemporary English taste in his preference for harmonic and contrapuntal boldness.
