The Bockum waterworks is located in Düsseldorf-Wittlaer , in the eponymous district of Bockum . From 1912 to 1989 it pumped groundwater by means of lift galleries and a vacuum line in order to feed it into the Duisburg municipal utility's supply network as drinking water . Today the listed buildings have been preserved and can be viewed at special events. A new waterworks is in the immediate vicinity.

history

With the up-and-coming Ruhr mining industry, Duisburg's population grew rapidly at the beginning of the 20th century. The Duisburger Stadtwerke had already put a pipeline network into operation to supply drinking water with the Aakerfähre waterworks . The second waterworks (therefore Bockum is also called Wasserwerk II) was planned in Bockum after the first test drilling in 1907/08, because the largest areas in the immediate vicinity of Duisburg were already occupied by industrial or residential construction, and the areas in Bockum could be acquired cheaply and the amount and quality of groundwater there were very good. Only later was Bockum incorporated into Düsseldorf. The water production for Duisburg on the right bank of the Rhine also included the systems in Wittlaer and on the Wittlaerer Werth as well as the filter wells in Kaiserswerth.

The area in Bockum was also planned because of the abundance of water from the inflow of the Anger at this location. The Quaternary Rhine sands filter the groundwater , which was lifted from vertical filter wells by means of siphon galleries via a vacuum line. The neoclassical building complex with portico , machine and boiler house, built between 1910 and 1911, has largely been preserved. In the large hall there are still the three operational double cylinder compound steam engines , which utilize the steam power threefold through high and low pressure cylinders as well as vacuum pump operation. They achieved a daily output of 30,000 m³ drinking water. Two of the steam engines were built in 1912 by the Thyssen machine factory and the G. Kuhn machine and boiler factory in Stuttgart, and another in 1914 by Ascherslebener Maschinenbau Actien-Gesellschaft.

After the shutdown in 1989 and the dismantling of the boiler, the use as a museum has been discussed again and again. However, it fails because of the location of the waterworks in the specially protected water catchment area, which strictly regulates access. However , the historic building can be viewed or rented on special dates such as the Open Monument Day , company events, in-house exhibition or other events.
