The hydropower plant Baldeney is a hydropower plant in Essen district Bredeney on Roller Dam of Baldeneysees . It is operated by RWE Innogy .

history

The Baldeneysee was built from 1930 and was primarily intended to purify water in the Ruhr . However, from the beginning there was interest in using water power as an energy source. The hydropower plant, which was built for Rheinisch-Westfälische Elektrizitätswerke (RWE) between 1931 and 1933, was integrated into the steel roller weir on the northern bank.

With the congestion target of 51.75 meters, a fall height of 8.7 meters is achieved. The average flow rate is 140 m³ / s, the normal energy is 26.7 million kWh (26.7 GWh) per year. The two Kaplan turbines each have a maximum output of 5000 kW, another Kaplan pump is available as a return pumping station with 8 m³ / s, but can also be used to provide an additional 1000 kW output. The feed-in power is normally 9.2 MW.

The Baldeney hydropower plant is the largest of its kind on the Ruhr. Further downstream are the Kettwig run-of-river power station and upstream the Hohenstein and Hengstey power stations and the Stiftsmühle .

From May to October 2016, the power plant will be modernized by RWE with an investment of half a million euros.

The power station is part of the Route of Industrial Culture and can be visited from time to time.
