The landmark in Dortmund's Hörde district, which can be seen from afar, was part of the Phoenix-West industrial plant and was used to store coking and blast furnace gas . The blast furnace gas from the Phoenix-West blast furnace, which was produced in varying amounts, was captured and stored in it. Until 1964 it was also used to store the gas from the coking plant on the site. After this coking plant was shut down, pipelines to the Hansa coking plant in the Huckarde district were laid along the Emscher . From 1966 on, the gasometer was also used to store the coke oven gas produced by Hansa.

The 76.5 meter high gasometer has a diameter of 49 meters and a capacity of 120,000 m³. As is usual with low-pressure gas containers, a ceiling pane floats at different heights on the contents of the container, depending on the filling quantity.

After the final shutdown of the blast furnace facilities, the industrial area was demolished. The gasometer has been preserved and has been on the list of monuments of the city of Dortmund since March 2002, along with the other systems of the former Phoenix-West plant . The Hoesch Gasometer is part of the Route of Industrial Culture .
