The Glörtalsperre is a small dam on the border of the Ennepe-Ruhr district and the Märkischer district in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany . The water surface is distributed roughly equally between the cities and communities of Breckerfeld , Schalksmühle and Halver . The Glör is jammed .

description

The dam , a curved gravity dam made of quarry stone masonry , has a length of 168 m and a height of 32 m. The water-covered area is 21 hectares, the storage volume 2.1 million m³ of water. The dam wall was renovated between 2000 and 2003. The water was drained. She was given a patrol that was blown into it and drains from the patrol . The air side was repaired with shotcrete and all operating facilities were renewed.

The dam , which is completely surrounded by forest , is framed in the east and south-east by the community of Schalksmühle with its districts Reeswinkel and Rotthausen, in the south-west by the Halveraner village Glörfeld and in the north by the Breckerfeld village of Loh and offers a natural beach and a nationally known motorcycle meeting place.

The Glörtalsperre is also known nationwide for the forest service that has been taking place every Whit Monday since shortly after the Second World War.

The water quality of the Glörtalsperre is excellent: the catchment area is hardly used for agriculture and mostly covered with forest, the mean annual water flow is almost three times the storage volume at 5.5 million m³. The large water flow is also a consequence of the comparatively high mean annual precipitation of over 1000 mm in this region (northern Sauerland, windward location with northwest wind).

The dam was built in 1903/04 on behalf of the Volmetalsperren-Genossenschaft (today: Volmewasserverband) according to drafts and under the direction of Professor Otto Intze from Aachen. It was put into operation on November 17, 1904 and inaugurated on June 11, 1906. It ensures the delivery of process water to the water-powered plants in the Glörtal and lower Volmetal as well as the elevation of the Ruhr when the water is low. The water regulation of the Ruhr is still today - besides the local recreation - their main task. It was operated from 1985 to 2018 by the Lüdenscheid water supply association. In July 2018, the Ruhrverband took over the technical management of the dam.

In 1997, the Glörtalsperre was threatened with decommissioning because the importance of water management faded into the background. The high recreational value of the facility alone saved it from destruction.

In April 1929 a youth hostel was built on the north-west bank of the dam , which was renovated in 1982. Since the 1950s, the Glörtalsperre gained increasing importance as a leisure and recreational focus.

From 1975 to 1984 the Glörtalsperre was expanded with funding from the Ruhr Regional Association . A bathing shore, a sanitary building with a DLRG station and improved access were created. In addition to the Breckerfeld Youth Hostel, there is a restaurant and a large car park in the immediate vicinity of the lake.

A hiking trail with a length of 3.4 kilometers has been laid out around the dam. It is also suitable for wheelchair users and prams.

The Glörtalsperre is also an important biotope for fish and amphibians. Especially the minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus) occurs in schools near the shore. Otherwise gray with a few elongated stripes, these native fish in Glörbach rise in quantities upstream in spring during the mating season, whereby the males are colored red, green and blue on the belly in a magnificent wedding dress. Many frogs, especially the common frog (Rana temporaria), find their habitat in the Glör. During the spawning season you can see mountains of frog spawn near the shore. After the tadpole phase, the young frogs climb ashore in midsummer, especially in the Rothauser Bay, and just before thunderstorms in large numbers, so that one can speak of a real frog rain. Other amphibians such as pond, thread, mountain and crested newts also occur at the Glörtalsperre and sometimes fire salamanders (Salamandra salamandra) appear, especially when it rains.

In 2017 and 2018, the Glörtalsperre underwent a general overhaul and was therefore drained. After the work was completed, the dam has been dammed again since mid-January 2019.
